THE WHITECHAPEL MURDERS

FALSE CONFESSIONS.

Tho " Daily Newa " of October 6 contains the following instances :— At the Marylebone Police Ojurt, yesterday, George Payne, who described himself as a laborer, and who spoke with a provincial dialect, was charged with being found drunk In tho stree*. — Detective Sargoant Gurtner, F division, said he recelvod information about eleven o'clock on Thursday night that a man In the Harrow road had been heard to say that he had committed halfa drz^n murders In tbe Vast end of London, and now be had come to the West end to commit balf-a-d z n more. He had alio made defUnt remarks about the Borne Secretary; Witness went after the man, whom be found to be. drank, and having questioned him took him Into custody. There was great exoltemeot m tho neighborhood. — MrG. Naab, landlord of a beerhonio, Harrow road, safd the prisoner entered his houae and had half a pint of beer. At that time he appeared all right, bat et er a timo the tQucl of drink was perceptive. The prisoner said he knew Morley and the Home Secretary would like to get hold or htm, but he wa« too clever for them. He h»d done five or six murders m Wbiteohapol, and now he thought he would come to the West-end. Witness thought that even If what the man bad said were not true he (the prisoner) ought not to eeoape punishment for making tbe statement. — Mr de Rntzen : Was he drunk ? — Witness ; I did not think ho was when he oamo In. — Mr de Ru Z9n : Yoa should be a jadge. — Witness : Well, the prisoner is a curious sort of a man to judge of. — Barrett, assls aut gaoler, said tho prisoner wa> charged at this Court on Monday- and on tha following d*y he was fined 53.— The prisoner said ho had not Insulted any one, and he appealed to the public at the roar of the Court if he had insulted them. He lived at Whltechapel years ago, bnt had not been there since — Mr de Rtrz -n told the prisoner he was one of those misohievoas fellows who go about and terrify people by boasting that he had done soma horrible crime In tho East. end. He waa respectably oonneoted, but was unfortunately the vrorso for drink when taken Into custody. The Alderman discharged the prisoner, adding he was sorry there was no law to punish him. — The young man oald ho had algned the pledge.
