Jean Luie, of the Tiobborne perjury case fame, has been committed fur trial at the Sydney Central Polioe Court. The facts of the oase are to this effot : The proseontor, Obarles John Zalgren, a German, possessed of property, beoini acquainted with Luie, and for a oons der able time paid his board and lodging account. An adver- | tisement was inserted In the paper, to whioh a lady replied signing herself Mtas Mulr. Zilgrtn met her end made an appointment for the following evening, but tbe lady did not appear. Next day Z»!gren received tbe following letter : — "Sir, — I am instructed by Miss Muir, late of Balmaln. and berrelativep, to tako proceedings against you for breach of promise of marriage, m which damages will be laid a' £5 0, Please name your solicitor. J. D. Fdmond Fmart, solicitor." Some days later on a writ for breach of promise w»s served upon Zalgren by a person named Thompson. Luie sympathised almcat to tears In the unfortu nate position of his beloved benefaotor, aud having questioned Thompson, euggested the desiiabllity of a compromise to avoid exposure. He also proposed that tbe prooets server sboald receive a guinea for tho cost of serving the writ. Luie casually Icquired whether the case would require a special jury, to which the answer waß m the affirmative, and that each jaryman's refresher would be £5 a day, so that tho defendant's expenses would run into £1000. Zalg<-00, at the prisoner'? Instigation, paid £150 In cash, with a promissory note for £25 more. Tbe prisoner, m the presence of Thompson, wrote across the writ when the cash w»i> banded over, "This ao'.ion is rquared." Thompson thereupon put hla signature to the words and pocketed tho money.
