THE SACKVILLE-WEST AFFAIR
The "Times," m a leading article upon American politics, says that President Cleveland's recent actions have rendered him unworthy to again receive the exalted position he now holds. In most scathing terms the writer proceeds to point out that with regard to the British Minister at Washington both Cleveland and Bayard acted with unmanly, and undignified haste. The abruptness of the United State* Secretary's proceedings m the matter are characterised as an insult to England deliberately perpetrated for election purposes, It is clear, the article contend?, that Sir L. SackvilleWest's recall has been demanded simply as a dodge to secure the support of .the Democrats and the Irish and anti- British vote generally. New York, November 1 The "Herald" declares that the action of Bayard is hasty and unbecoming his dignified office and urges his dismissal from the Secretaryship of i State.
