TROUBLE IN BRITISH BORNEO 1 FIRE IN A DOCKYARD. COFFINS AT A PREMIUM. (PBK PRESS ASSOCIATION.) Sydney, November 1 The following Eastern news, per steamer at Thursday Island, is to hand, dated Hongkong, 15th October :— A Tientsin paper publishes a letter | from an official of the Emperor's Court at Pekin, stating that if the Chinese Exclusion Bill were passed by the United States China will have no option but to prohibit the landing of Americans m her territory, and should this step not have the desired effect, China would then cancel the treaties entered into with America, and recall her subjects living m the States, expel all Americans from China, and cease to hold intercourse with the United States. The following additional news from China and the East is to hand by the mail : — It is reported that serious trouble is impending with a native ruler m one quarter ot the British Borneo Company's territory. There is great distress m Honan and North lhrivi, owing to the Autumn freshets, which have turned the country into a huge sea A fire at Yokohama Dockyard destroyed a large factory and modelling house with machinery of great value. Two warships had a narrow escape. A report has reached Foo Chow that an epidemic haß caused frightful destruction of Hie m Hingua and Cheolghen districts. In September the mortality was so widespread that the supply of coffins was exhausted.
