Addington gaol la this time the spot, and a young Maori, named John Murray, Is the Individual to whom the present excitement la attaohed. It will be remembered that reports appeared m oar oolamns last week of the Mandovllle Hotel having been broken Into, and the till robbed on the night of Sunday, the 13th tnst, aud that Constable Oartmlll, of Ktlapol, had skilfully ran to earth a North Island Maori named Murray, wbom he strongly euspeoted to be the onlprlt, Murray gave the oonstablo some trouble to effaot his osptare. H) was further suspeoted of having he'ped himself to the contents of the meat-safe at M(ddleton's| Hotel. Murray was brought before the Court at K*iapoi and remanded till to day to the Addlngton Gaol; there being no provision beyond the look-up for tl:o safe keeping of the prisoner at Ksiapol Thia morning at oil o'olook, Warder Hardy, In order to have Marry ready for the first train for the North, gave him his breakfast m his cell, the warder to the best of bis belle , locking the door as he oamo out. At a quarter to a yen tbe oage wna cpen and the brd had fl <wu. On examination noth£ Ing waa found to be wrong with the look. The door opened into the y »rd, and baok against the wall. It is auppoaed that Murray had, after opening the door, olambered on to It, and ao reached the lop of the wall, from whence he g»t on to a low roof and dropped to the gr»uad. At that early hour In the morning few people would be about, and it Is not known whether anyone saw the e»o»pe. Murray is about five feet seven and a half inohea m height, of medium build, and was drcieed m a dark tweed ooat and vest, light oheok trousers, and soft tweed hat, lie wore a moustache, ond haa a smart and active cp^eutanoo* The police have been put ou to endeavor to trace the fugitive. —'• Telegra-A" October 22.
