' Lord Knutsford speaking at Ipswich said it was both the duty and desire of the Government, if possible, to ascertain and sympathise with the rights of the colonies and to meet them so long as they were consistent with Imperial interests. Tho object of the Conference between delegates from the Chambers of Commerce and the Committee of the Imperial institute was to promote trade with the colonies. Australia, he mentioned, had demanded permission to contribute towards tho colonial defences, and hence the Defence Bill was introduced by Government. Tho object of the iriugar Bounty Conference was to favor tho sugar producing colonies. Lord Knutsford endorsed Lord iioseberry'B speech at Leeds.
