THE EMPEROR OF GERMANY
RECEPTION IN ROME. (PER PREBB ASSOCIATION, ) .Rome. October 13. The Emperor William of Germany was accorded a cordial interview with the Pope which lasted half an hour. His Majesty afterwards paid a visit to the Vatican galleries and St Peter's Cathedral. A_ banquet subsequently took place m the palace of the Quirinal. King Humbert m his speech said that the Triple alliance between Germany, Austria, and Italy had conduced to the peace of Europe and the welfare of the people. He proposed the toast of the " German army " which he said waSKthe bulwark of the nations glory. The Emperor William strongly echoed the allusion of King Humbert to the alliance between Germany and Italy. He said that Germany had won her unity by the sword. He said there was an analogy m the history of the two nations which implied a perpetual agreement between them, He pro* posed the toast of the " Valiant Italian army," and concluded by expressing his thanks for the splendid reception he had received. He decorated Signo«Crispi with the order of the Black Eagle, remarking that no one had ever deserved it more.
Rome, October 14 It is understood that the Emperor William has advised the Pope fo abandon his claims to temporal sovereignty, and to seek an alliance with conservative Powers.
The Emperor William and King Humbert held a review of the Italian army, consisting of 33,000 men. Great enthusiasm was shown on the occasion by the people. ' The Empeior William of Germany and Count Herbert Bismarck assured the Pope that existing treaties between Italy and Germany precluded any claim of the Vatican to temporal power. [ Emperor William to-day performed the ceremony of crowning the tomb of King VJctor Emmanuel. The proceedf log s were marked by great enthusiasm.
