GENERAL SUMMARY. (Per Press Association.) Auckland, October 15 The Mariposa brings dates from Europe to September 23rd. The Atlantio steamer, Greoian, wbioh left Montreal oa September 22nd for Glasgow, went aseore on the 25th off the {coast of Ayrshire. The captain and first mate of the British barque Gulfe have been arrested m London on a charge of having attempted to scuttle the vessel, which sailed from Quebeo on July — for Greenook, and arrived at Queenstown on September 6th, G. W. Petter, founder of " The Echo," the first one-cent paper m London, and one of the original members of the great publishing, ] house of Casßell and Co., died m London on j September 18. Several important changes m the Salisbury Ministry are said to Jbe pending, and will probably include the Hon W. H. Smith, First Lord of the Treasury, and Home Seoretary Matthews. The failure of the Furara, wool staplers of Halifax, was announced on September 17. Further suspensions at Bradford and Halifax are expected.
On September 6th Mr Pritohard Morgan obtained a concession from the Orown to work a traot of 59 square miles m County Wioklow for gold.. He believes the gsld reefs oross under the Channel from Wales.
A mutiny occurred among the troopa at Portobello Barracks, Dublin, on Sunday, September 13. Exasperated (by their treatment the men attaoked the quarters of Major Whitely and other omoers. They broke into and sacked the Major's house, destroyed all the furniture, and took the Major's portrait into the yard where they threw it upon a pile of blazing goods. Five of the ringleaders have been arrested.
Mrs Jane Tale, a handsome and fashionably attired lady belonging to Niagara Falls, was found dead m Phoenix Park on September 22nd, having suicided with opium. The case is considered, a mysterious one, and the police are investigating it. A Gorman named Ludwig waa arrested on suspioion on September 14 of being the perpetrator of the recent Whiteohapel murders. He had threatened a fallen woman m, Whiteohapel with a long knife. In his pockets were found a razor and a pair of Boissors. He cannot speak English, and had only been m the country three months. Another arrest was made on the 18tb. An attempt was made on the night of September 7th to steal the bodj of Hugh Maxwell, alias Brooks, the murderer of Preller, reoently exeouted m St Louis, A watchman shot at three men m th.9 cemetery near the grave, and after they fled found a rope and grave-robbing tools. Riohard A. Proctor, the famous astronomer, died at Wedland'a Hospital, Hew York, on September 12th, of blaok vomit, the worst phase of .'yellow fever, Mr Proctor had been spending several weeks with hiß family at Oaklawn, Marion County, Florida, m which State the fever is now epidemic All possible precautions haye been taken hy the New York health au.tho.ritiea 1 to prevent the outbreak of the scourge m that county.
