An extraordinary shooting case is reported from Walbundais, on the border of New South Wales and Viotoria. A little girl named Alioe Paraby was playing with a little boy named Thomas Jones a few days ago, when tho boy tried to kiss rhe girl, and on her resisting, and running home,' he threatened to shoot her. Nothing was thought of the threat until the following day, when the boy encountered the girl, and fired off a gun, several pellets of shot entering the muaoles of the girl's leg. The boy Jones has been arreßted on a oharge of maliciously wounding, and has been remanded pending the girl's • recovery.
How different the world will be m a oentury may be gathered from two or thrte inventions that are just now being critically examined. An eleotrical carriage was tried the other night m St. James's street, and proved a complete sucoess, running up and down the road as rapidly as though pulled by a team of horses, and absolutely under control. And now an enterprising inventor proposes to build rowing boats wholly of aluminium, the lightest known of all metals and one of the toughest. The members of the Primitive Methodist Church are the suoooeafuJ tenderers for the Oddfellows' Hall on Show Day. Owing to the large numbers who attend their anniversary tea on that day they have, at a large expense, secured tbe best place m the town for both the tea and the anniversary services, wbioh will be conducted by the Rev P. W. Jones, 61 Waddington (late of Christohurob), on the Sunday following, Nov. 4th. Judging from the large numbers of people who are m town on Show Day, we believe that the outlay inourred will be justified by an increased attendance at both tea and meeting.
A telegram from Nelson to the " Christ, eburob Press " referring to the Whangapeka silver mine says that the prospeots are very encouraging, and Messrs Cuff and Graham, of Ohristcburoh, have let a oontraot for sinking 50 feet m the lode, and from a meßiage received it appears that the contractors are already m rioh ore. Assays of 2 owt of stone lent to Chriatohuroh some time ago to be tested, gave a very satisfactory return, the average being 75ozs of silver, over Bdwtß of gold, and nearly 20 per cent of lead. In gome assays the return was much higher.
A social gathering and oonoert was held at the Templar Hall, Tinwald, on Friday even* ing, m aid of the funds of St. Andrew's Church. Musical items were contributed by the following ladies and gentlemen : — Mesdamoa Criip, P. Williams, Brooks, and Tippett, and Miss Jeffs, Messrs Thomas, Mayo, Simpson, Gates, Moor, Corrigan, Jephson, and Ward. Mr Kneen acted as aooompa-ust. The Hall waa packed, and everything went off well. During an interval refreshments were handed round, The Rev Mr Garbett returned thanks to all those who had m any way contributed to the success of tbe gathering.
Captain Carey, of the ßotomahana, noticed distress signals when passing Dog Island on Friday, and reported the matter to the Harbor Board, who sent a tug out to ascertain the cause. It was found that the fishing smack Nellie wai> wrecked lust Tuesday morning, several miles off Dog Island, duriog a heavy gale. A sea struck her, oarrying away her rudder and breaking the deck m. James Young, the master, a young unmarried man, was washed off and drowned. The other men, John Young and James Dunoan, were rescued by the light keeper, who observed the acoident and pluokily put off m an open boat, risking his own lift,
On Wednesday morning, while the westerly gale which we have been enjoying for the past two or three days was blowing m fall force, an official of the Colonial Bank (saja the 11 Southland Times ") became a victim of its pjayfulnoss. He was taking a bag containing Borne £500 or £600 m notes and oheques to another bank a short distance away, when away went his hat before tbe wind. He tan aft r it, but as he stooped to piok it up the bag opened and notes and oheques were soon flying hither and hither through the air. After a long and tedious search all the paper was recovered except one ohequo for £8 15s and notes to the value of £22, for whioh missing paper a reward is now offered.
