CONCERT AT CHERTSEY.
An concert and dacoa In aid of the funds of the Ohertaey District Library look place In the schoolroom last evening, •nd proved m every respect an unqualified ■aee'eii. The room wae well filled, and all leemed to enjoy the entertainment provided for them ; and to jadge from the applause accorded to the performers their efforts to please seemed to be highly appreciated by the audience. Miti and Mr T odd contributed two violin and piano overturn daring the evening, and the Hlues Todd sang as a duet, " Won't you buy my pretty flowers." Mr Lew ton, an old performer m Chertsey, who had come a long distance to amuse the audience, vu highly lacoeufal with his droll stamp ipeeob, "The temperance question. Hiss Fliher sang m a pleasing manner "The Bine Alsstian Mountains'" and " Til be all smiles to-night." Mr H. English, an immense favorite as a oomio performer, aan< m c»pltal style "The monthly nurse" and " G»momlle Tea," am** was encored for hie efforts. Mr Pope sang an excellent martial song, bat your correspondent was unable to get the name of It* M? Pearoe made a good impression npon the andienoe as a negro impersonator, with his negro melodies. He was encored. Mr Gee tiokled the risible faculties of his hearers by his song, " The troubles of a married man*" He also contributed a good reoitation. Unfortunately this gentleiatn was snffarlng from ft severe cold, which Interfered to come extent with his singing, bat he was anooettfal and had to respond to the Inevitable encore. Miss Smith sang fine.'y Franz Abt's German sons, " When the swallows homeward fly," Mr Hersell, who possesses a nioe baritone voice, sang m fine crisp style " The fonr jolly smith*," excellently aooompanied, by the way, bj Miss Fisher. Mlai Grace Straohan, a veiy young planicte, gave two short operatic selections from "II Trovatore" and "La Travlata," with good time and expression- She was heartily applauded. Mr Grant sang m a manner that pleased -the audience, " Scotoh lssile Jean," and In response to an enoore gave another •ong which pleased equally well. Many of the vocalists daring the evening were tnaoh Indebted to M*rr English and Miss F sher for excellent aooompaniments to their varlons songs. At the end of the concert Mr Wells proposed a vote of thanks to the performers, many of whom had come • long distance at great personal inconvenience to assist, also to the audience and all who bad m any way taken part m making the affair a success. Mr Wells and bis colleagues deserve all credit fol the trouble taken In arranging the whole business of the meeting ; and Meedames Wells and Chllds rendered excellent service m the refreshment de-: partmen*. In conclusion It may be noted that the piano, an exoellent inatroment, was kindly lentjfor the occasion by Mr W. Straohan. Mr D. Todd aoted ss Chairman daring the evening.
