SHOCKING VITRIOL-THROWING CASE.
At Manchester Ass'zas a few week ago, Mr Justice Grantham had before him a Jabourer named J-ihi Mills, who was charged with throwicg vitriol on Alice Mills with Intent to do her grievous bodily harm. Prisoner snd the wom?n had been living together, but, finding that he had a wife alive, the we man said that they must part, Next day the prisoner threw some vitriol over her, destroying her left eye and disfiguring her for life. The jury found the prisoner guilty, and he then asked far mercy, besause he had only recently come out of penal eervitade. Tne Judge In passing sentence, said : I Bhould think there is no brute m the whole county of Lancaster ao brotal as you are and so b.utal as you have baen, beoauae this is not the first timo yiu have committal an offence ex.otly similar to this, and when yo j ask me to be merolf al to yon because you have only just cime out of penal servitude, you Barely must have forgotten altogether that I »m aware of what that ponlshnvnt waß. I .Is Irue you have just cume out v,f ptnal servitude, for it is now ten yea;s bilco yn weie ■entenoed for throwing corn eivt fljldover your then wife. Yen ill-treated her exactly m the same way ; she also lost her eye, and was dift6gorei for life. It is also s&id that there Is a charge of bigamy against yon, tut that ottenoe is a mere bagatelle when oon : p»red with this horrible crime. The leaßt sentence I can pass upon you Is one that will prevent you repeating that offence to any other poor woman who may be placed m your power. The sentence 1 pass opon you is that you be kept m penal servitude for the rest of your life.
