THE LONGBEACH DRAIN PIPE AND BRICK WORKS.

The above works have been In operation aome twelve m)D'ha or bo, dnd are now m full going order and turning ont largo quantities of superior drain pipes, these .articles . being _.. in. maab greater.. demand m the district «nd locality of the works than are building bilcks ; In fact at the. time cf oar repreßsntative's visit to the works there were only a few score drain pipes m Btook, tbe draining operations on the LoDgbeach Estate and also on the surrounding farms using up the pipes as fast as they are turned out of the fcilus. The works are under the direct supervision and charge of Mr James Hlllyer, a practical day worker and one who has had considerable experience of the trade In other parts of New Zealand aa well bb In the Old Country, and ho states that the olay m the Longbeaoh pits ia fatly equal, if not superior to any he has seen In the colony for brick and pipe-making, the latter eapeotally. Up to the present time moat of tho olay used has been made np Into various s'zed drain pipes, ranging from 2-inoh to 9-lno.h, bat 3 and 4 Inch pipes are those 'mostly used so far, a total of 200,000 p'pen m all having been turned out since the works commenced, and about 60,000 bricks having blbo be&n prodaoed.

The locality of the works Is on the road from Willowby towards Longbeaoh, olobq to the Longbeaoh Road Board's offices, this position having been ohoaen after a searching examination of the Longbe»oh Estate for n Buitable olay bed, combined with other advantages. The clay now being worked ia In a bed of about four feet thiokneas, and extends for a number of aores, bo tho supply of tho raw material is practically unlimited, and to show the faith of the manager In the undertaking ws may mention (hat he has purchased a blook of land from Mr Grlgg, and ia bow building thereon a comfortable two-storey briok dweUng-housa. This will bo the first briok houa i m the district, and will ba a very oomforttblo dwelling whan finished, the walls be(og built hallow, ao that dampness, will not be poseible m tbe Interior of the rooms, and each room on the ground floor being provided with a fireplace. Woven men are now employed on the works at the various details of pipe-making, and the maohlnery ia driven by an §horso power engine. One of the machines In a oombtned pegging and pipe moulding plant, oapable of turning out any efz;J pipe from 2 Inohes to 9 lnohaa In diameter, it being also used for machine briok making if required, and another machine turns ont drain pipes only. The buildings consist of a permanent kiln for burning pipes and brioks wiih three furnaoeo, (che bricks of which thia kiln Is built were made on the ground by Mr Hlllyer as a trial of the quality of the day and they have stood the teat very, satisfactorily), and large aheda roofed with galvanised iron and fitted np with raoks for drying the pipes and containing the raiohinery m m<i. A good many of tho farmers m the locality have made purchases of drain pipes from the worka s<noe they were opened., but Mi Qrlgg has not been able to e apply all the demand, he having gone m for very extonslve drainage operations on the Longbeaoh estate, and these operations areexpeotodloextsnd over some yeare, ao that, even if only tbe Longbeaoh orders were exeouted at the works, their oontlnuanoe la certain for a long time to oomo. There Is no doubt, however, but that, as the farmers see tbe value of the work done and the results accruing from Mr Origg's expenditure on draining, they will be ready to follow salt as soon as possible. "M Hillyer hopes to * be able to forward samples of his pipes sod bricks to the next A and P. Show m Ashbutton, and If so, it may be taken lor granted that the products of this new local industry will be carefully examined, and the results considered very oreditable to all concerned.
