The world has long been familiar with the large sums whioh were given for sittings m Henry Ward Beeoher'a ohuroh at Brooklyn, What worked so well there appears likely to work not less euooessfully at Da Witt Talmage's Tabernacle, m the same town, pews m whioh are let to the highest bidder. One pew, the price, of which is £18, ran up to a premium of £150 ; another of £20 to £151. Nine others fetched premiums of £20 and upwards.
An exploring party whioh has visited the West Coast Sounds m the cutter " Who " has brought bapk among other curios a " Beatree." It; is about four feet six inches m length, and was obtained m about eighteen fathoms of water m Breaksea Sound. The " find " was purely acosdental, the tree being brought up with the anohor. It has rootß, branches and every other attribute of land timber save that the leaves are of the oolour of seaweed. The wood is very hard, and takes a fine polish. Speoimens of the tree have been found before, but not very frequently.
An exohange writes : — " Experiments now being conducted m England go to show that another produot whioh New Zealand can produce to perfection may be sent home. Mr Tallerman has been experimenting upon some fresh strawberries, and he haß found that by putting them m cold storage chambers on the dry cold air Byatem, they were, after 12 days, every bit as firm, bright, and full ooloured as when picked. They are reported to have retained all the characteristics and flavour of fresh gathered fruit. More than this, it is believed that they would remain equally fresh and good under the same conditions for a couple of months at least." We oan testify to the faot that there are good grounde for that belief as about two months ago we partook of a splendid dish of English straw* berries brought out m prime condition by one of the direot steamers.
As illustrative of the benefits whioh the United States has derived from Protection. 11 Tho Irish World " points out that last year the Western States manufactured nearly as much as the whole country did m 1860. The Southern States now make 10 per pent, more pig iron than was made m the United States the year before tbe outbreak of the Civil War. When Fort Sumpter was fired upon, the entire exports of the Unified States from the formation of the Government had been £1,800,000,000. Since then they have amounted to £2,800,000,000. When Abraham Lincoln was inaugurated the fijrst time, the manufactures m the United States amounted to £360,000,000. Now they amount to £1,400,000,000. Twenty-one years ago no steel rails were manufactured m the country. Two years ago, 1,764,000 tons were produced. The result of manufacturing Bteel rails m Amerioa instead of depending upon England for them, is that they are much oheaper than they were when they had to be impprted from that country.
The London correspondent of a oontemporary Bays: — The great sene&tion (now, however, talked out) has been the marriage of the Dowager Duohesa of Montrose to Mr Milner. Every one m London knows of •' Mr Manton," as the Duohess desires to be known m racing capacity, but hardly anyone was prepared for the startling announcement that an old lady of seventy, however eooentrio, had married a young man of twenty.four, however fooljsh. Young Milner is of good family himself, his grand-father being a barpnet oi the name, and he is connected with a city firm, the head of which, m faot, "gave away " the bride. He is said to be fairly well off {being known as " Millions " by his affable fellow clerks), so that it ia not probable that the marriage has been the result of careful financial discretion, It is presumed that not" even the most oaptious will quarrel witlj me for assuming that it is not a love-match ; and so the solution seems to be that a craving for distinction has actuated the foolish youth, while her well-known eccentrioity has, as usual, guided the lady. The Duchoßs of Montroße ie the mother of the present Duke, (who is some twelve years older than bis step' father.) and was a daughter of the seoond Lord Deoies For many years she has kept" a large training stable, under the natno of " Mr Manton," and only last year one of her horses won the Derby. On the turf she is familiarly known as "Bob," and though possibly feared m Borne quarters, is certainly not respeoted. She was married after the death of the Duke to Sir Stirling Crawford who died a few years ago. Her present and third marriage would not have been known had it not been for the aooidental presence of an amateur organist m the ohuroh, who saw from the organ-loft, and went away teeming with the oxoitement. Hhs buohos9 has settled £3000 a year on her husband, and fn oaee of her death allows him £6000- so possibly after all there ie a financial aspe'ot to the matter.
Hollowav's Ointment and Pills.—More precious than gold.— During summer and autumn the prevailing diseases are diarrhoea dysentry, fevers, and English cholera, particularly dangerous to children and young people. In these acute cases, where internal medicines cannot be retained, the greatest relief will immediate result from rubbing Hollow-ay's soothing Ointment over the abdomen. The friction should be frequent and brisk, to ensure the penetration of a large portion of the ungent This ointment calms the excited peristaltic action, quickly flaying the pain. Both vomiting and gripping yield to it ; where fruits or vegetables have originated the malady it is proper to remove all undigested matter from the bowels by a moderate dose of H.oJJoway f s Pills before using the oipttnent.
The football match between the Englishmen I and Otago on Saturday resulted m a draw, \ neither scoring. i

At about 230 a.m. on Sunday, a stable and spring cart belonging to Mr Biohard Pitkin, a farmer at Templeton, were burned, evidently through the act of an incendiary. An attempt was made to bum Mr Pitkin's house. Kfigs soaked m grease were pushed under it, and set on fire. There is considerable exoitement m the distriot, as three weeks ago a similar attempt was made to destroy the house of a man named MoOaffney.
The "Railroad Gazette" says that the meohanioal oonstruotion of the bicyole is well worth study. The requisite amount of strength is probably obtained with a smaller proportion of weight than m any other machine, and considering the trying nature of the strains, a fair amount of durability is obtained. The prioe per pound (about 12s), of the best and lightest machines is considerably ia excess of that of almost any other maohinery.
A Russian lieutenant of engineers haa perfeoted an apparatus for intercepting telegraph and telephone messages m time of war. The apparatus ia contained m a small oblong box, and weighs rather less than three pounds. The telegraphic receiver is of the recording typo, and a battery for returning falße messages to the enemy forms part of the equipment. An invention of the nature above described' cannot fail to be dangerous m the hands of unscrupulous persons.
It is estimated by Professor Lesley and others who have made a oareful study of the petroleum supply that the American stook is now rapidly approaching exhaustion, and that within a score of years the accumulations of millions of years of geologic time will be praotioally used up. Up to the begin, ning of 1885 the quantity raised m the United States had reaohed the enormous total of 261,000,000 barrels. In 1885 the yield was 21,042,841 barrels.
In a German botanioal journal, a new method of retaining the natural oolours of flowers when put under pressure for preservation has recently been published ; it oonsiets of dusting salicylic acid upon the leaves, and removing tho powder with a brush when the petals are dry. Or the same acid may be used as a solution, one part of acid to fourteen of aloobol. Qotton-wool or blotting paper impregnated with the solution is laid above and beneath the flowers as the; lie m the press. It is eaid that red oolours m particular are well preserved by the simple process.
The recently invented prooess, says " Iron," by whioh wood is made to take on some of the speoial characteristics of metal, has been turned to practical aooount m Germany. By this process the surface becomes so hard and smooth as to be susceptible of a high polish, and may be treated with a burnisher of either glass or porcelain ; the appearance of the wopd being then m every respect that of polished metal, having, m faot, the Bemblance of a polished mirror, but with this neouliar and advantageous difference, namely, that, unlike metal, it is unaffected by moisture.
