Auckland, September 21. At the R.M. Court to-day, Garrett Bros., Bootmaker?, sued A. Wanmtn and McCarthy, two of the man who have gone out from their employ on strike, for the sum of £20 each, damages. The o»868 were baaed on a cert»ln agreement entered Into between plaintiffs and defendants, and which bound the latter to the employ of Gtrrett Bros, for » term of years. Mr Cooper appeared for the plaintiffs and Mr Palmer for the defend' ants. No defence was offered, the agreement being legal and proper, but It transpired m the evidence that the men haa been compelled to leave their work by threats of peraonal violence when the atrlke commenced, and they were afraid to return, Wauman stating that it would oost bb much as his life was worth to go back. Dr Giles,. the presiding 8.M., and Messrs Cooper and Palmer commented strongly on this condition of things, and Dr Giles said he hoped the two defendants would conault the police, and that the very strongest and firmest measures would be taken to put down any such abominable system of terrorism, and that anyone found guilty would be punished as he deserved . Judgment was given for the plaintiffs far £20, the penalty not tc be enforoed If the men returned to work.
