NEW SOUTH WALES.
Sydney, September 21. One of the crew of the barquentine Hector, from Port Sarding, New Hebrides, who had been detained ashore for misbehaviour, plunged m the sea to swim off as the vessel was sailing, and was fired at from the. shore but without* effect. Those on board the vessel returned the fire, but no casualties are reported. It is not known whether the firing party ashore were whites or natives. A fierce thunderstorm passed over the city to-day, , Wimble's warehouie and the National Bank were both struck by lightning. The flag poles on the top of the latter building were shattered but no serious injury was done. During the storm an immense quantity of rain fell and considerable damage was done to stores m lowlying buildings by the floods.
