ASHBURTON LIVE STOCK MARKET
Mr D. Thomas (late of Mateon, Cox and, Co.) reports upon the live stock market m the Aahburton district for the week ending 20th September, 1888, as follows : — On Tuesday, at the Ashburton Yards, I held my usual weekly sale of cattle, sheep, and pigs. There was a fair attend ance of farmers, dealers, and others interested, but the biddings were not markei*by that briskness which has been so apparent of late. Ido not, however, think that values will rule much lower for the next twelve months at any rate. The entries of stock were comparatively small, not more than 2500 sheep and 50 head of cattle being brought forward for the day's requirements, amongst which the only lines of sheep worth mention were two good lines of merino ewes m lamb, one lot Miles and Co. selling at 8s eacb, the other being sold by myself at 8s Id. I also sold a grand line of 200 crossbred ewes, with 125 per cent lambs at 15s 6d, and 100 full-mouth three quarter-bred Southdown ewes, with 100 per c»nt lambs, at 12s. Other sales made by me were as follows:— Fat wethers, 13s lid, 14s 3d to 14s 9d ; rams, 4s 6d to 5s eaoh ; fat merino wethers, 11s 9d and 12s ; hoggets, 8s 3d, 10s 3d, 10s 4d, 10a 6d to lla each ; and crossbred ewes, with lambs at foot, 11b, 11b 6d, 12s to 15 3 6d each ; merino, ewes, m l&mb, 6s to 8s Id In cattle the demand was somewhat better than of late. I sold 5 fat cows at £4 183 6d ; springers, £3 14s etc. . No pigs yarded. tKi5 Sxlb — Last Friday I held my usual fortfiightly sale of sheepskins, bide*, fat and tallow. My catalogue was a fairly good and representative one, and I succeeded m clearing the lot at values equal to any former sales. Butchers' best orosabreds making from 4s 9J, si, 5s 6d to 5s lOd eaoh ; seoond quality, 3s 61, 4s, 4b 3d to 4) 8i eaoh ; inferior and dry, 2s, 2s 6d, 3s to 3s 3d ; pelts, 2d, 4d to 7d each ; best merinos, 3a 6<J, 4s to 4s 8d each ; seoond quality, 2s, 2s 9J to 3a 2d. Fbofekties. — I note an Improved enquiry, but I cannot find farms for sale suitable for purchasers, who want something upon whloh they cpn make a living without a certainty of visiting Mr Latter, Official Assignee. Gbaih,— Wheat still holds the premier position In the eyes of speculators, and sales are being effected every day at prioes similar to the following :— 3i 2d,to 33 6d In trucks at Aahburton fur good lines of shipping grain. Oats are not very lively at present, although they will see better values before long. Prime short are worth Is 10£ dto 2s m the trucks at Ashburton ; Danish, Is 8d to Is lid ; Tartars, a good line would readily reach 2s 3d* Barley, norte offering.
