PRISON LABOR.
(FJB PRESS ASSOCIATION.) Ikvsbcabgilli, September 21. The Town Council asked the Minister of Justice to allow prUon labor to be employed free of charge to cirry out certain municipal works, and m this way compensate the Corporation for the loss sustained through the Railway Deptrt* ment having taken one of the town reaerrei, the «ffaot of which had been t> render the pobllo baths useless At the same time it was explained that the Oonncil intended to make a claim against the Department for their aotlon. The Corporation had been paying 2« a day for prison labor, and were the first pablis body to do so/ The Minister declined ths request He could only promise that if the labor were granted it would be at the bare oost of maintenance, but that would probably exceed 2s per day per man. Free prison labor was not allowed for munlolpal works In any part of the colony. An exoeptlon was made m favor of defenoe works, but these were of oolonial Importance. If the request were granted it would lead to a lot of trouble. Applications would pour m from all parti of the colony.
