THE HOSPITAL.

Visitors to the Ash bur ton Hospital of late have been charmed to notio* the air of homeliness, comfort aad strict o'eanllnesa which are tha characteristics of the Institution. Under the paesent matron's — Mrs Mackay's — management those little reforms whioh mean so much to patient as well as to oasaal visitor have been earnestly aud oneolentlously carried oat. The bnllding i self ia vary far from being a suitable one, and h must be very distressing to Mis Mac'iay to know that after every shower of rain oio or more rooms will be completely flooded owing to the defective brickwork. Soraa of the room*, oven now the Trustees have expended a substantial iam on repairs, are uot habitable m wet weather. The balok work is faulty m some particular, and allowß the wator to penetrate tha walls to the dlsoomfort of everyone who has to do with the care of the rooms. The rooms which are at least l'able to dampness are most 1q U39, there tha patients are made as comfortable a« it is possible for kindness on the matron's part, and skill on the doctor's to make tbem. The Hospital proper ia comfortably famished, and Mrs Maokay's love of fl. jwer*, evergreens and ferns, is on every side apparent; The taste with which the rockery with its varieties of ferna a..d bush specimens has been constructed Is exquisite, and the spot will bo a cool and sylvan retreat dating the heat of eammer, for patients as they become convalescent.. The regular lady visitors to the Hospital are kindness itself to tha elok or Buffering patients, while everyone speaks most highly of the management. A. look through the Hospital on an afternoon would to many people, we are cu e, bo a genuine surprise, and many uoaooountable and preoonoelved notions concerning Its oharaoter would be removed.
