The Ashburton Guardian. Magna est Veritas et Prævalebit. MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 17, 1888. FLEMINGTON CHEESE FACTORY.
There is much to be thankful for m the fact that at the annual meeting of the Flemington Butter and Cheese Factory Company the other day, the directors were able to show, at least, a small profit nstead of a loss on their years operations. The factory has had up hill work ever since it was first opened, and the formers and graziers m the vicinity do not seem sufficiently alive to their own interests or the interests of their district or they would support more heartily a local industry which is destined ere long to bo a leading one throughout the agricultural districts of New Zealand. The support of the farmers is the only thing to make the local factory a paying concern tp shareholders. With a prospect of a good grazing summer before us aiid with an upward tendency pervading the produce market, which is likely to be maintained, there seems no doubt but that the chairman's sanguine statements as to future success will be fully borne out. The annual return of £3 13 per cow must be taken as a very fair one, and as double the t quantity of milk can be handled without any increase of expppsep, it may be considered certain that with fhe supply doubled, the next year's profit will be considerably increased. When the Company can dispose of twenty tons of cheese locally, out of forty manufactured, and that too at the best market price, there is everything to be said m favor of the extension of the Company's business to manufacture produce for the London market.
