CONCERT AT RAKAIA.
o Tho Oddfellows at Rakaia hold a most succaasful oonoert and danoe ai; the Town \ Hall on Friduy ovnir.g. The hall was / nioely decorated, and presented a very cboa ful appearance The weather being fine, and it being well known that the bnßt talent m the district would be to the fore, there was a crowded houao. The first part of tho program mo was an overture by Mceprs Gates and Wa r d (piano and violin.) Misses Young, Fisher, McMillun, Kobo Bruoa, Mrs Broad bent, and Messrs Poaro*, Grant, Ward, R Bruce, and ihe ltov B. OolUnsoontributtd songs which were well rendered and much appreciated. This portion of the programme concluded wi h a s'.ump speech by IVlr Arthur Oox, which was well given, but m some instances the < local allusions wero perhaps a little too : personal. Nevertheless, it took well. ( After a short interval Mrs Seorstan 1 played on overture on the piano, which was followed by songs from Messrs Grant, Gee, Minnis, Pearoo* and Gates, from Aahburton, and a duet by Messrs Primmer and D. Street, Individual praise . would be invidious ; suffice to say ev«ry- < one contributed much to the enjoyment } of the evening. Tho concert concluded with a faicical comedy entitled "Jonathan Roberts," written by Mr A. Cox, who took the character of that much sought after individual. Mr P. ■'■treet mado a firstrate Qonstable O'Toole, jlr D. Bruce took the part of Deteotive Do Bvor, and Mr J. Haig that of warder. Tho scenery waß < painted by Messfß Cox and B.uce. The j farce created roars of laughter, and it need , eoaroely be added that Jonathan outwitted the warder and gentlemen m blue, and c escaped from Ripa island much to their chagrin. j The entertainment throughout was one of the most successful, financially and o horwise, held hero for somo time Everything wtnt off wojl, evoa the little - brushes behind the curtain during moments : of oxcitoment amongst tho get-tlomcn performers. Tlio room was then cleared, and about eix'y couples attended the done*, under the M.O. ship of Mr D J Bruc. Excellent music wiib provided by 1 Messrs Gates and VVurd, and dancing was I thoroughly onjoyed for Boveral hours. - Kefreßbmants wore provided free by the Committee, and to which ample just'eo was dono by mopt of thoso prost nt Fo ended a very pleasant evening, many expressing a hope that unoth'.r would coon be * arranged.
