MEETING AT MOUNT HUTT

4, „ .. , A meeting of ratepayers m the Mount Hutt district-, called by the Chairman of the Road Board was held yesterday to consider the question of dealing with tbe storm water. Abont 40 attended from all parts of the district. Mr McMillan took the chair and called npon Mr Jackson to explain to the meeting Mr Flooktons . plans for carrying the water to the Rakala river, whioh had been prepared by the direction of the Road Board some eight years ago. The principal points of i this scheme are that a bank should bo < made sufficient to turn tho water In a I direct line from Mothvon to tbe Rakula \ river at a point abont half a mile above : the Hlghbank homestead, that no channel 1 should be formed, but that the water < should be allowed to spread over the land < on tbe upper side of the bank m a wide I stream, and that at tbe Terrace it should I be taken over a oonorete shoot. Mr < Flockton'a estimate of cost was abont < £2500, tbo greater part of whioh was for 1 ooDc-ete work. The report of tbe County 1 Engineer on this scheme was read, and < bis estimates for a work of the description 1 were £6750. Hie report suggested as an I alternative scheme that the original courses for tho water from the hills to tbe sea ahoald be opened out and all fences across the oonrsas removed. Tbe following resolution was proposed ] by Mr Jackson and atcinded by Mr 1 Cameron : " That the Road Board employ ' & qualified authority to report on the ( echeme of taking the water over the Rakala Terrace as proposed by the Road £ Board." Oarried unanimously. An i amendment proposed by Mr McMillan, ] seconded by Mr W. Henderson "That ] the County Council be requested to open , op three ohannela In the courses of the < Highbank oreek, the Dry oroek, and Springfield oreek" was lost. Messra Jackson, Friedlander, Dent and . Patton spoke against the amendment instancing the present unsatisfactory way m which the present artificial channels worked, and the difficulty there would be m keeping the channels from constantly changing on aooount of the shingle bars whioh would be formed. Mr M. Friedlander proposed and Mr Dent seconded and it was unanimously carried " That on the opinion of the engineer appointed being reoelved the Chairman of tho Road Board at once oall a public meeting to consider the opinion and take stops to aot upon it." After a vote of thanks to the Chairman the meeting broke up.
