The Ashburton Guardian. Magna est Veritas et Prævalebit. SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 1, 1888. COALS FROM CARDIFF.
The proposal to obtain coals from Cardiff to supply Australian cities during the continuance of the miners' strike is not likely to come to anything. The offer is perhaps on a par with the proposed shipment of English coal miners which was reported to be sent to Newcastle. It seems most probable that should the miners hold out until the coal m stock m Melbourne, Sidney, and Adelaide is exhausted they are likely to have their demands acceded to. Should any attempt be made to supply Melbourne or Sydney with West Coast coal the New Zealand miners will also go on strike, as such a proceeding would be an attempt to coerce the Australian miners into subjection by showing that coal supplies could be got independent of their action. The New Zealand miners are content to supply an increased local demand, and they will help their brethren m Australia with money until the strike is settled, but will not allow a cargo of coal to be sent across the water. The idea of obtaining coal from Cardiff even at 25s a ton, tempting and cheap though the offer be, is not likely to come to anything. Melbourne, Sydney, and Adelaide would absorb at least 30,000 tons of coal per week, and it would require twelve steamers with an average cargo of 2500 toDS each to arrive weekly m Melbourne, and as the trip would take at least six weeks it means that at least 150 vossplb would have to be employed, and these cannot be got just on the spur of the moment.
