» Those of our readers who take any interest m cricket may find amusement m working oat the solution of tbe following crloket problem. A correspondent of the " Refereo " supplies this cricketing pnzzle : — " The teams who played were composed of good men, however, and for convenience sake we will call the match England v Australia. Now, prizes were offered by the supporters of the latter for bowling — one for the best average In Eagland'a first innings, another for best m second innings (if there were two innings), and another for the best bowlar m the two innings combined. Some four or five of the Australians performed with the ball, but only two had any sucoess, and these two we will oall A and B In England's first Innings A got six wloket and B four, and A'e average was 1 run a wicket less that B'a. A therefore was entitled to trophy No 1. In England's second venture A oaptnred four wickets against six by B, and again A'a average was 1 run at wloket Icsb that B'a Trophy No 2 also went to A. Bat now comes the strange part of the story. Upon the runs being totalled up it was found that, although A's bowling average was 1 ruu lower than Bs m eaoh innings, and although they got ten wicketo eaoh, B a average came ont two runt lens that A's In the two Innings combined, and B received trophy No 3. much to his surprise. How came this about ?"
