A considerable number of unemployed have come m for railway passes during the last few dayi, and the Dlstrlot Engineer has telegraphed that no more men can be taken on. Captain Bendall, Secretary of the Underwriters' Association, telegraphs from Blenheim that an attempt will be made on the firßt favorable opportunity to float the stranded barque Kate Tatham. Dunedin, August 28. Alfred Horley, alias Hawley, alias Frederlok Horn, was commuted for trial for forgery. David Bowers, a settler at Stoney Creek, near Balclutha, was found dead near his residence on Saturday evening. The cause was heart disease. At a meeting of the West Harbor Council to-night, it was stated that a good deal of destitution prevailed among the unemployed, and ft was decided to wait on Mr J. Mills, M.H.R , to get him to induce the Government to plaoe a sum on the Supplementary Estimates to provide work In repairing roads.
