The coercive tone of the message is resented by the press/ Government consider that the proposed retaliation on part of the United States will promote local trade, and that Halifax and St. John's will become the great watering ports, and take the place m that respect of Boston, Portland and New York. Ministers treat the messagelightly, and express the opinion that the Dominion will be able to take cara : of itself. . ; Washington, August 26V The President's message bas been received with great enthusiasm m the States, and it is thought bisection has completely "dished" the Republican candidate's chances for the Presidential election.
