In Sydney complaints are made that Chinese cooks are ousting whito men m the hotels and restaurants. The bricklayers' strike at Brisbane has been settled by the masters agreeing to pay wages at the rate of ] 2s a day. The shipwreoked Bailor with his pitiful story and bundle of blue-serge saved from the wreok, is m Timaru again. Donald Dinnie, the Sootoh Athlete, stood as the model for a statue of Wallace, whioh ia to be placed m the gardens at Ballarat. No less than seventeen valuable Linooln Bheep, belonging to a Hawera grazier, were worried to death by dogs m one night re. oently. At the Wanganui Rink the other night a young lady, an expert skater, fell and brtfke aer wrißt m two plaoes. She had her hands ia a muff. Recently the police made a raid upon a Chinese gambling den m Lower George street, Sydney, and suoceeded m capturing eight Europeans and three Chinamen. A praotioally inexhaustible supply of water has been obtained at the Silver Crescent Mine, Broken Hill, and it is proposed to convey it by means of pipes to the town. The Moonta (S.A.) Copper Mine proprietors have returned their profits for the half yeat at £32,000, on which the proprietary has to pay a Government royalty of JEBOO. In response to the protests of the Catholics, fish is m future to be provided at the Viotorian railway refreshment rooms on Friday. A member of -the Viotorian Permanent Artillery was burnt to death m a house m Melbourne the other night when m a helplese state of intoxioation. Aooording to the "Wellington Press," threefifths of those who were present at the reoenl Protectionist banquet at Wellington were boys from 13 years to 19 years old. Viotorian agricultural implement-makers complain that British and foreign manufacturers exhibiting at the Exhibition have olosoly copied the colonial-made implements, In Queensland at the end of laßt year there were 12,926,000 sheep, 4,473,000 homed oattle, 305,000 horses, and 73,000 pigs. It is reported that the expense to which " The Times " has been put m defending the libel case brought against it by O'Donnell amounts to between £30,000 and £40,000. Sir John Downer had an . encouraging reoeption m the South Australian Assembly the other day, when he introduced a Divoroe Bill similar to that agreed to by the New South Wales Parliament. A Viotorian journalist, named Waldon, was lost for five days m the Australian Alps, where he remained without food. When found he was m a most exhausted condition, with his olothes torn to rags. The miners at the Stockton Colliery, Sydney, have appointed a vigilance oommittee ' to investigate oases of miners dealing with . Chinese, and have resolved to vote the oommittee 2s 6d for each oonviotion. , Australian papers are "on " the Maritime Council. The " Sydney Evening News " 1 speakes of the " Maritime Gounoil Dictatorship." The " Melbourne Argus " calls it " a wretohed bit of bounce." In the Canadian Senate Mr Blair has notified his intention to move that it is desirable to negotiate with the Government of Great Britain with a view to scouring a political union with the British Empire on a Republican basis. A man named Herbert Stonehewer Cooper, formely editor of the " Fiji Times," was re« oently oommitted to Adelaide lunatio asylum as insane. He was found on a road near Port Elliott late at night, having, walked ninety miles without food. The disoiples of Cobden and Bright are not to be outdone by the Protectionists m the matter of celebrating their principles at the festive board. They are to hold a meeting for the purpose of taking steps to get up a Freetrade banquet before the session doses. The First Offenders' Aot m force m this colony, says an exchange, is an admitted oopy of an American State Aot. The management of rvilways m New South Wales seemß nearly as bad as that m New Zealand. George Fiaher, Italian Consul, the other day received by mail from Borne his Consul's flag. It is a very large one of the three national colours— green, white, and red — arranged vertically. In the centre of the white part is a shield, with red ground, bearing a white cross, and above is a huge royal crown worked m colours. A meeting of the local Committee of the New Zealand Alliance was held last night, when preliminary arrangements were made regarding the visit of Mr T. W. Glover. It was reported that Mr Glover would arrive m Ashburton on Saturday, Ist Sept., and would probably visit Mount Somers that evening. He will oonduot service at the Wesleyan Ohuroh on the following Sunday morning, and give an address at the Salvation Army Barracks on Sunday evening. A publio meeting will take place at the Oddfellows' Hall on Monday, 3rd September., preoeded, if possible, by a prooessioD. Fuller partioulara will be duly notified by advertisement m a future issue. The •• New Zealand Times " is responsible for the following :— " It was simply deplorable that so muoh of the House's time should have been wasted on Thursday m listening to Mr VerraU's long-winde^ explanation of his crude and impracticable, if not absurd, soheme for a State Bank of Issue. We have said ' listening,' but there was not muph of that, for most of the members when not , yelling with laughter at the grotesque utteranoes of the new member for Ashley, were too eagerly engaged m pelting him with, poverty-stricken jokes and « small beer ' utterances to he paying any attention at all to what ho said. The whole soene was one of wretohed buffoonery, and reflected little credit upon the House.
Herr Hugo Zoller, speoial correspondent for the " Cologne Gazette," has juat visited Adelaide with the view of ascertaining the condition of the Germans m that colony. Herr Zoller has travelled nearly all over the world, having assisted m the exploration of the German colonies of the Cameroona and Tozoland, on the slave ooast of Africa. Mr Henry Richard, M.P. for Merthyr Tydvi', who died last Tuesday had been secretary of the Peace Society for over thirty* seven years years, and since 1868, when he was first elected for Merthyr, was the fighting champion m the House of the sooiety. He was for many years an Independent minister m Southwark, and was one of the chief advooates of Disestablishment. At Barrington's Hospital, Limeriok, (says the " Pall Mall Gazette," 4th June), a man named Hannan died from hydrophobia. Three months ago Hannan, when playing with a strange cat which had wandered into his house, was bitten by it on the right thumb, He paid no attention to the wound, whioh appeared trivial ; but he beoame affeated with spasms, and symptoms of hydrophobia shortly after appeared He was removed to tbe hospital, and was so violent that he had to be strapped down. Considerable exoitement was caused m town, Bbortly before noon to-day, by the bolting of a two-horse dray. Mr MoCosker, of Wakanui, was driving tbe dray up West street when the horses were startled by a railway engine, Mr MoCosker, who was walking beside the dray, held on to the reins to the junction of Burnett street, but here he had to let go. Mrs MoGoaker, who had been m the dray, meanwhile jumped oat. The runaways bolted along Burnett street East, their erratio movements being watoned by fully a couple o2 hundred people. The sooial gathering held at the Oddfellows Hall by the Ashburton Guards, last ' > evening, was a thorough suaoess m every way, There was a good attendance and the affair went off with spirit. During the evening songs were given by Mr Donovan and others, Mr Moss contributed a humorous reading, which was well reoeived, the Boselle Bros, gave a olever performance on the Boman Rings whioh was muoh admired, and a squad of the Guards gave a good exhibition of the singlestick exeroise. An exhibition of the oavalry Bword exeroise whioh had been announced, had to be, through unavoidable causes, struck off the programme. Messrs Brooks (piano) and Mayo (violin) provided the music for the danoeß, and Mr Banger sup- , plied the refreshments. Last evening at Tinwald Mr W. H. Warren read Charles Dickens' "Christmas Carol " to a highly appreciative audience. The general points m the story were brought out m Mr Warren's now well-known style. The audienoe applauded at every pause m the readings. Mr Joseph Ward, of Ashburton, presided, and after the reading complimented Mr Warren highly upon the elooutionary treat with whioh he had provided his hearers, and the audience m response to the call accorded a hearty vote of thanks to Mr Warren for his able servioe. Mr Warren took this opportunity of discoursing on the business of the Life Assurance Sooiety of the United States, placing the subjeot before his listeners m what may be termed " a highly popular manner," and a vote of thanks to the Chairman terminated a very agreeable two hours' literary entertainment. We believe that Mr Warren intends (at the request of a few friends) to re-visit Ashburton at no distant date. He will no doubt receive a oordial welcome. A meeting of the Ashburton Acclimatisation Sooiety was held m Mr Quane's office on Thursday, 23rd inst. Present — Mr Crisp m the chair, Messrs Quane, Moore, Jameson, and Shury, The minutes of previous meeting were read and confirmed. Correspond dence from Mr S. 0. Farr, Canterbury Sooiety, re price of young fish was read, and consideration deferred until next meeting. A bonus of £5 was voted to Banger Gale m recognition of his servioes for the past season. The opening of the season was fixed for Ist Ootober, and tbe lioense fee retained at £1 as last year. A motion to make the lioense fee for boys and beginners 103 per annum, and also a proposal to issuo lioenses after the Ist January at half prioe (10s), were negatived. The Chairman and Seoretary were instructed to take necessary steps to get the regulations, as amended, gazetted, and licenses printed as early as possible after. A vote of thanks to the Chairman concluded the business.
