The island of Bun Tig Yun, one hundred square | miles m extent, was the scene of the , ( visitation which took place on July 14. i The shock was most violent, and almost ■ paralysed the inhabitants who number ' about 2000. The town was virtually [ split m two by the upheaval, and large . numbers of terror-stricken inhabitants i were swallowed up m the chasm caused 1 by the eruption. Many of the people j rushed to the foot of the mountains and . were killed by the falling lava and boulders. Nearly all the houses m the 3 island were destroyed, and moßt of the i residents were killed. The eruption > lasted from morning till dark, and next | day a fire sprung out from the crater. [ It was m the panic that ensued that 1 most of the lives were lost.
