[PBR PBEBS ASSOCIATION. J Auckland, August 21. The statement that Jerry, a Native, son of Matthew Tepnke, had been murdered at Paeroa, is fonnd to bo incorrect. It has transpired that Jerry was injured by an ax* falling on bis head. The man is still alive. . The Sydney " Evening News " of Thurs • day last, which reached here per Te Anau today, says: -"The steamer Wakatipu has just arrived from Wellington. It had on board Gasparini, the escaped convict from New Caledonia, m charge of Detective Walker. At daybreak this morning the prisoner was mieuing, and search has been made throughout the ship without anecesa . The water police and tbe Sydney French. Consul are now making further •earch. It is believed that the prisoner either jumped overboard during the night (he was seen on deck at 2 a.m. to-day) or is concealed by some of the crew. There is great excitement on the wharf." WELLINGTON, August 21. Mr J. D. Boss, travelling agent for the Singer Sewing Machine Company, was drowned this morning while attempting to cross the Otaki river on horsebackGbbtvooth, August 21. The Midland Railway works are being pushed on to Nelson Creek as fast as possible.
