CANTERBURY PASTORAL LEASES.
(From otjb own Correspondent.) ' Wellington, August 13 Some Important alterations were made by the Council m the Land BUI m regard to pastoral lease*, which, if adopted by the House, would have meant the locking np a greit portion of tb« O nterbury runs, (whioh fall due In IS9O and Involve an area cf 2,000,000 acres of land), for a further peeled of twenty-one years. The Bill provides that leas s shall bo re-let Id three different clasees, mnu-jtainous land being leased In blocks of EOOO acree upwards, or fixed leases for twenty-one yearr, without right of resumption during that period. Then^xt class of land. In blocks, of under 5000 acres, on various ■j stems, and the third o!aia~ (nearer the ■»»), for agricultural and pistoral purposes, Id smaller blocks on different systems. It was originally intended that ueond class land should ba re-let under various systems, bat by the insertion of the word "shall" by the Council m the olaose (whioh permitted second class runs In tome instances to be re let on terms of twenty-one yean) it was thought that this would be considered imperative In all A deputation of members Interested to-day waited on the Minister for Lands on the subject) and the result was that a promise was exacted to put the word " may " In the clause, thus enabling land to be rented m different ways, according to Its quality. The Minister also promised that m future the maps of a run to be released shall show m different colors the land to let onder various systems, instead of the present plain sketoh maps, which will make mttters very much clearer to in^wndl^g »ntHwg.
