LONGBEACH ROAD BOARD

A meeting of this Board was hold on Friday. Preßent -Messrs J. Grigg (chairman), 8. (Holland, J. Williams, and J. Shearer, CORRESPONDENCE!, ' From the County Council Btating that the Council's Engineer had reported that repairs needed for Terrace road bridge were to have been made by Road Board from timber fron? other bridges, and that present would sei ye for Borne time yet. It was decided to point out to the Council that the Board would have done as reported if Council had redocked whole of the Wheatstone bridge instead of half, but. as it waa they bad no sound limber left from Wheatetone bridge to do repaiiß, aluo to again draw their attention to the unsoundness of the bridge, From Jno. Osborne, laborer, applying for a bridge over drain to give access to his allotment.

— The Board could not ccc their way lo grant thoir request m cases of this kicd where original lot had previoußly been granted bridge for access.

surveyors' bbport.

The Surveyors reported as follows : — SI. Waterton New Road. — We have taken s along the road drain below Donaldson's boundary, and find that though there is not a great amount of fall, yet we think for the purposes asked for relief could be given by widening the drain from the present culvert to corner of road, say two feet, and oleaning out the dram towards Waterton for a few chains; but while this would be serving parties immediately interested, we are informed that ratepayers m Waterton township are objecting to the quantity of water that is now Bent down the drain through Moses' land, which we understand floods a considerable area owing to there being insufficient means to oarry the flood water from the drain to the natural oreek. This being the oa&e we would ask whether the Board will review the whole matter and take into consideration the oonfining of flood waters to natural channels as far as practicable.

(2). Boundary Boad. — A bridge on this road requiring immediate repairs to planking, &0,, we are having came dona,

(3). Surveyor's Eoad. — The bridge on this road near brickyards not being of sufficient span to carry the flood water now brought into the creek, scoured away the eastern approach and oaused a subsidence of the bridge. We have had temporary repairs effected, and reoommend that a 16 feet span bridge be erected.

(4). Poplar Boad. — The concrete bridge on this road baa been smashed duriDg the last heavy flood. It would seem that the larger portion of the Hinds River overflowed at the Boundary Boad and came down this outlet, and the bridge not having the oapaoity to take the water, the effeots of pressure and scour caused the damage. We would recommend that a ford be made on the upper side of tbo road.

(5) The maintenance man has been repairing damage to roadß daring late floods, and is now at work m the Longbeach Road. Clause 1. — It waß decided to widen drain from culvert to corner of road acd Surveyors were instructed to inspect outfall from Moses' drain to creek.

«Tho remainder of report with works recommended was adopted.

COUNCIL DBAIET NBAB WATERTON MILL.

The Chairman brought before the meetIng the ' application Mr Protheroe had made to the Council to have this drain widened ; the estimated cost was £14 — After consideration it was resolved that the Board would contribute a third pf the cost if effectual outlot for storm wuter wag made. REPUTATION. Mr S. Giles, lessee of part of reserve 031, interviewed the Board and asked that a drain be made along the road to take the water that now entered at the top portion of his section. The Surveyors were dlreoted to Inspect and report on the matter, foed's eoad.

Me Holland applied for permission to make a drain alongside thla road from Mr Smith's to junotlon with Waterton road being continuation of Ford's road drain, The drain through Mr Smith's land now brought the water baok into Ford's oreek and did considerable damage to hla land he only asked to be considered the Bame as those above him.

The Board saw no objection to the request provided It was done to the surveyors satisfaction.
