ASHBURTON FORKS SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
The usual monthly roeotlng of the A.ihburton Forks School Committee was held m the sohoolroom on August 4' h, the whole of the members being present. Ihe correspondence received from the Board of Education re the differences existing between the Committee and the Master was read, the Board stating that the Inspector's reports of the school being generally satisfactory the Board could not dismiss the Master, but were ready to consider any complaint the Committee had to prefer against him. Correspondence was also received and read, asking the Committee to be particular as to how they allowed the school to be used for purposes of amusement ; also that the Board did not wish any of the Incidental Fund to be used for school treats or prizes. A letter was also received from Mr Blake, asking for the use. of the school on August 20 h, to give a lecture on India, Africa, and Switzerland, with views, the proceeds to go for the benefit of the Ghurob. — Granted under the usual conditions. The Chairman stated that he had received a letter from th.6 Board of Education which he declined to open, as he considered It had been tampered with. Proposed by. Mr S. Knox, seconded by Mr J. Corbett — " That the letter be returned to the Board of Education, asking their Secretary If he had occasion to re-open It himself." —Carried. The Master's report was received and read, the coal asked for to be procured. The Inspection report of the Inspector was also received and read, and It was resolved to have the necessary repairs to ventilators, etc., attended to as mentioned m the Inspector's report ; also the removal and fixing of tbe gates to be attended to at the same time. It was mentioned that aomeof thechlldren belonging to the members of the Committee had been oaned by the Master more than was j considered justifiable on hln part. However, the matter waß allowed to drop, as It conld be brought forward at a future meeting, the Committee having so muoh other business, lie the grievances between the Committee and the Master, it was proposed by Mr J. Corbett, seconded by Mr J. Kuox — " That the Chairman and Mr J. Corbott louk over the books and papers, and the grleyanceo of the Committee against Mr Hale be forwarded to the Board."— Carried. A discussion took place with reference to the Insulting letter which had appeared In tbe Ashburton papers some time ago, a part of which was considered to affect the whole Committee; The Chairman stated that he should endeavor to find out the writer of tLe same. He also wished, with the Committee's consent, to ask Mr Hale to produce oopy and exeroiae books In the school used by the children. Mr Hale here came into the Bohool, and the Chairmen explained to him that the Committee wished to see the children's books. Mf Hale stated that the children had their books at home, and also took exception to the proceeding, as he considered the books the private property of the children. He also wished to know why the Committee wished to see them. The Chairman said that he wished- to compare the various writings with a document m his possession, and asked Mr Hale to permit the Committee to see any books that might be left >m the sohool, and stating to him that should any books be found or writing that would compare with the writing of the document he should hold it for farther consideration, and that the greatest oare would be taken of It until returned. The desks having been looked into a number of books were examined, the Chairman taking poeaesnlon of the books whloh the £jommittee > considered would compare , with the dooaraeut be held,
