The brigantine Waitemata, which arrived yesterday from Kaipara, met with terrible weather on the passage, During the gale the vessel sprang a leak, and it was found necessary to jettison 50,000 ft of timber of the deck cargo m order to save the vessel from the fury of the sea.
At the Canterbury race meeting yesterday, Forbes, a jockey, was killed by his horse falling m the Hurdle Race.
The Chinaman Hing Loong, who murdered Mr Morris at Blacktown, has committed suicide.
The Secretary of the local branch of the Land League has received a letter from Mr J. G. Biggar, M.P. for Cavan W., announcing that probably two members of the Irish party would visit Australia m August next.
The crew of the R.M.S. Mariposa are engaged m discharging the vessel under police protection. As yet there has been no disturbance of any kind. It is understood that arrangements have also been made to coal the vessel. It is not known what action the Seamen's Union will take.
