Mr Henry Forbes, the New Guinea explorer, has been appointed Curator of the Canterbury Museum, vice the late Sir Julius von Haast.
The " Preaa" says :— Mr H. 0. Forbeß made a visit of exploration to New Guinea m September, 1885, with a emill party, constating of Mr Hanneaay, Mr Anderson, and twenty-four Malay carriers. They atartad on a jinrney of exploration m tbe interior, principally with a view to investigate from what family the biological features of what seemed ihe more easily accessible of tho higher mountains, the Owen Stanley Range, had derived their origin. At Sogere, abut fifty mlloa from Port Moresby by road, though only t/renty-two milea m a direct line, a oamp was formed, consisting of a dwellinghouse, Malay quarters, trade and provision store, a plant drying shed, and a meteorological obnervatory. Here the various plants and botanical specimens ware dried, and blx times daily for the space of six iiiontha meteorological observations were taken. Me Forboe, aoSorapanied by tho Rev Mr Chalmers, made a great effort to accomplish the ascent sof Mount Ocren Stanley, but owing to the defection of the natives, the undertaking oould not be accomplished. Mr Forbea was afterwards appointed by the Hon. John Douglas Government Resident at Dinner Island, a small island m the centre of the China Straits.
