AuokiiAnd. July 31. A strike has occurred among the local shipwrights m consequence of two men who were employed oa the barque Coulnayle at the dock being dismissed by the contractor, Mr J. Bigelow. It is also asserted that Bigelow has taken on men with some means m place of others who had been out of work for months. At a meeting of shipwrights held to-day to consider tho matter, it was unanimously resolved that no men should work m the dock for Bigelow. A man named John Gougb. employed at the Parotarau tunnel, on tbe Main Trunk railway line, was killed on Saturday morning by a fall of eartb, the timber m the tunnel having given way. At the inquest a verdict of "Accidental death" was returned. It is stated that since the accident thirty men have left the works, alleging that they are unsafe. Wellington, July 31. The Taratahi Dairy Factory shareholder, last night resolved to sell the whole of th? concern to the milk suppliers for £700. The property originally cost about £2000. The Dalefield Factory on the firßt year's working has declared a dividend of 10 psr cent to shareholders, and paid £40 investment for sinking fund, and have given milk suppliers 3|d per gallon, being a farthing more than they expected. Dunedin, July 31, Tbe soft goods firms m Dunedin, at a meeting, decided to forward through the Chamber of Commerce a number of recom- , mendations and suggestions for the better defining of tbe Customs Act, and to avoid evasions and chance of goods being passed free at one port and at others duty being oharged. A number ot items are recommended to be changed, from apparel and clothing 25 per cent to hosiery 20 per cent, others to drap.ry, and various other changes are suggested.
