Oamaru, July 30. Upwards of 200 men attended the meetIng of the unemployed to-night. Mr W. J. A, Sanderson, In the absence of the Mayor, presided. The unemployed, about three weeks ago, had represented their case to Government, and urged tba starting of certain works m town pending the commeocoment of the Oamara-Nsaeby road. Mr Ueeher has been sent to report on the proposed route for the road, and Mr Colin Allan on the stato of the Oamaru labor market. Neither the Mayor nor the unemployed had heard anything of these officials', visits, and In oomequenoe a meeting waß called for to-night to consider the position, and resolutions were passed unanimously, stating that as neither of the above-mentioned officers oonßulted with the Mayor or Mr Sumpter or the unemployed, or any persona who were capable of affording them information on which they could base a reliable report, the meeting was of opinion that any reports that may be supplied by those offtoers may be misleading and unworthy of apceptance by the Government. The meeting was further of opinion that the wisest conrfl© would be to have the Oamaru-Naaeby road oonstruoted under the supervision ot the Walt&ki and Manlototo County Councils by unemployed labor under the small contract system, and that unlesß the construction of Iho Oamaru-Naseby road is to bo undertaken forthwith temporary employment m the district should be found for the unemployed at the rates ruling eleewhere m connection with similar unemployed works. Mr Paßßeli, of Tlmaru, attended the Courthouse, Walmate, yesterday, to ascertain the number of persons ia need of employment on Government relief work. The Courthouse was crowded. The following are the wages per day offered : —Married men, 3s 6d if the work 1b m or near the town, 4s 6d if the work ia at a distance necessitating camping : single men, 23 6djif the work is In or near town, or 3s if at ft distance.
