The cable news announcing the occupation of Massowah as an Italian dependenoy appots m this issue. In 1885-6 Italy claimed Massowah and war with Abyssinia suoceeded. A reinforcement of troops giving thr total foroe a {numerical strength of 35,000, turned the tide of war; and though the King of Abyssinia further fighting, the Italians have held supremacy. They have already done a considerable amount of work \n fortifying Massowah. The Coral Island port, as we stated on a previous occasion, is the natural outlet for Abyssinian trade, and is therefore of no slight commercial importance. At the same time, it has its drawbacks. It is |one of the hottest of hot spots on the Bed Sea coast, the thermometer often being above lOOdeg. Fahrenheit m the shade ; and argues, fever, and dy sent fry are prevalent praotioally always.
