Considerable sensation w»a expeHnocad list yesr whan It bv>o*me kno^n tha< suoh a munificent gift: had bee i made to the oolony as the National P-irk, It was subsequently ascertained, however, that the donor of the Park waa giving what was not his to give, and as nothing further has been heard In the matter, Dr Newman has bean enquiring from the Native Minister what steps he is taking to complete the formation of the National Park. Mr Mitohelson states that he has done nothing io the matter, There Is a big law suit pending about tbe block of land, Taupo— nui — Ate, in whlob the mountains are situated, and nothing oan be done till the lawsuit Is ended, It is however, gratifying to learn that the summits of Ruapehu and Ngarnhoe already belong to the colony, and that praotioally the mountains are reserved to the Nation

Additional Information was given in the House to-day, in the shape of a memorandum from the General Manager of Railways, on the Abt system, whioh Is of Interest at the present time, In view of the Midhnd Railway question. Mc Maxwell states that he has reoelved Information privately from the gentleman In oharge of the system of Indian railways, that a length of two miles of Abt line had been tried In India, and tbat it did not stand the tests satisfactorily. It wai thought that the Idea of having It on the B.lan Pass would be given up. It did not work well on curves, and the engines oould only olimb hills "provided their heads are kept straight." In the acoount of the line previously given, it was stated that twelve and a half chains was the minimum curve used ; but he» understood that muoh sharper ourves were needed on the Bolan Pabs. The memorandum conoludea :— " It Is, therefore, Important to notice that the Abt system Is probably unsnited for very sharp ourVea, and that, ln this respect, the Fell system, whfoh oan work with facility upon five ohaln curves, is superior."
