Says the "Hawke's Bay Herald ":— Last year the Napier hospital rooeived £528 9s lOd from voluntary contributions. £452 19s from patients, and £150 from local bodies. The Chris tohur oh hospital received £45 from voluntary contributions, £316 15s 4d from patients, and £3,026 5s 5d from local bodies. As the Government gave from the taxes £4,910 6s 2d to the Christohurch hoßpital, and only £524 18a 9d to the Napier hospital, the idea is suggested that those who do most for themselves get the least from the national treasury.

Concerning the recent death from diphtheria at Te Awamutu. a correspondent of the •• Waikato Times " writes :~Many people drink filtered rain water, colleotcd on the roofs of other houses. Perhaps they keep pigeons also. Pigeons are particularly liable to diphtheria. The house-tops are the oolleoting places of pigeons, and thus any bird affeoted by diphtheria would coramunioate it, through its droppings or otherwise to the rain water. An instance has just boen given where four out of five ohildren m one house* hold m Naples died from diphtheria, whioh has been traced to the causa mentioned above.
