Its weight is 160,000 pounds. A German dootor who has investigated the subject says that a man'B heart is two square inches large than a woman's. It is said that there are 150,000 domesticated ostriohes m the Gape Colony, and that £1,600,000 is invested m tho business. Messra John Verrall, Marmaduke Dixoni and Alfred Saunders were nominated for the Ashley seat on Thursday.
Detective Neil, of Christohuroh, is to exchange distriots with Deteotive Kirby, of Timaru. 11 The New Zealand Musical Monthly " for July is to hand. It is still full of news of interest to the musioal profession and particularly to bandsmen. Tho North Canterbury Eduoation Board yesterday carried a resolution to meet once every three weeks. The next meeting of the Board will bo on the 9th of August. Owners are reminded that nominations for the Ashburton County Hunt Club Steeplechase, must be m the hands of the Secretary by 1) p.m. to morrow (Saturday) evening. Edward Smith, bead shepherd on Haknteramea Downs Station, was lost m tho snow on the ranges, and his dead body was found on the 18th instant by a search party.
It is anticipated that the Waterloo Gup, to be held at Dunedin, m August, will be well supported by the coursing fraterniiy. It is satisfactory to know that all the good prizes at the last meeting fell to Canterbury. A collision occurred m Casa street to-day between a carrier's express belonging to Mr Canning and a oart belonging to Mr Sawle. One of the shafts of the express ran into Mr Swale's horse, injuring it to suoh an extent that it has since died. A prize fight for £20 a side took place m the Theatre Royal, Ohritsohuroh, last evoning, between Ellis, of Wanganui, and Hopwood, of London, and resulted m an easy win for the former, who kooked his opponent out m two rounds, Another " centenary "is almost due. This time it concerns the missionary world. Dr A. Judson, " Tho Apostle of Burmah," who was born on the Bth of August, 1788. While his praise is all tho oburohes, tho Baptists olaim him as one of their men of renown. Hence they have determined to keep bis hundredth birthday fittingly. Mr McOallum, the Government leoturer on dairying, says that milk standing twenty .four . hours will produce equally as muoh cream as if standing forty-eight hours. He also says th&t milk for cheese making should bo from ten to fourteen degrees ; anything lees than that would not make a first-class artiole.
The birch bark industry is now an important one m the Nelson district, and many I men are employed m stripping the bark. Iv 1 is said to bo superior to wattle for tanning purposes, and a set of harness made thirty years ago from birch bark tanned leather is said to be still m use m Kelson. Three pounds fifteen shillings per head was tho coat of tho last consignment of stoats and weasels per Awatere. A great reduction m the cost is looked for, as the London office of the [New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Company havo established oolleoting oentros m England for the Government. The Rev James A. Crawford , Reotor of Stranorlar, Londonderry, and Rural Dean Surrogate of tho Diooese of Derry and Bap* hoe, is making a tour through tho colony; His visit to thid colony is with a view to gaining information regarding New Zealand as a field for immigration. New Volunteor regulations will shortly be issued. Instead of tho rule whioh requires two-thirds of (a oompany to attend drill m order to constitute a parade, the new regulations will only rerjuiro one-half of the oompany to be present. Under this arrangement the Volunteers will be afforded opportunities of making up for tho reduoiion m the capitation grant.

By the mail tho directors of the Temuka Dairy Factory Company received advices that their last shipmont of oheese to London was disposed of at satisfactory rates. The loaf cheese, weighing 91bs eaoh, brought 52a per cwt., and the large oheese, averaging about 451b8, 50b per owt. The experience of the Tcmuka oompany m this case varies considerably from that of other factories, whioh have almost iuvariabiy found that tho larger oheeces realised the higher prioes.
A moderately filled bouse greeted the second appearanoe of " Hans tbe Boatman " on Thursday evening! and tho piece wont off as successfully as on the previous evening. Hans, who, of course, was the centre of attration, at once enlisted the sympathies of tho audience and retained them throughout. Gladys and " Jeffle " sustained their respective rolct with as much credit as before. And the parts of bluff old Yank, Mr Parwell. Harry Finch the lieutenant, and Darrell Vincent, the false friend, were all delineated with suocesß. Little Fritz and Little Hans gained great kudos for their clear:-representa-tions. The Company left for Christoburoh to-day, where no doubt a suooeaaful seasta awaits them.
A very satisfactory meeting m connection with the Band of Hope and Sunday School of the Ashburton Presbyterian Church took place on Wednesday evening m the ohuroh, the children mustering at 6.30 p.m. m great force and being then regaled with tea and refreshments, provided by the teaohers and friends. At 7.80 the children ugain reassembled, with a large number of adults — the parents and friends of the little ones — when a varied programme was gone through very smoothly, the Eev A. M, Beattio presiding. The enter* tainment consisted of readings, recitations, songs, and instrumental pieoes by some of the children, and m addition several pieoes were contributed by the teachers present. Altogether a very pleasant and enjoyable evening was spent, and, after a short address from the Rev Chairman, tho gathering dispersed all greatly pleased with the whole proceedings.
A meeting m connection with the proposed Society of Arts, Soienoe, and Industry was held at the Arcade Chambers laßt evening. The Rev E. A. Soott occupied (he ohair. The objeot of the meeting was to take into consideration the advisability of constituting : a Sooiety for the promotion of art, soienoe, and industry. It was suggested by the Chairman that a room be obtained for the use of the Association, and that a library be formed of suitable books for suoh an Association, also that the walls be deoorated with works of fine art to be supplied by members ; that periodical leotures be given on the subjects of art, science, and industry, and that there should be an annual exhibition of work. It was resolved that an Association of Art, Soience, and Industry be formed m Ashburton, and that those present together [ with those who had already given their names to the Sooretary, be members thereof. It was further resolved that members pay an annual subscription of five shillings, and that a Provisional Committee consisting of Rev E. A. Scott, Messrs Jenkins, A. Ireland, T, Gates and E. M. Blake be appointed to transact the neoesßary business, and report at a publio meeting to be held shortly, a vote of thanks to the Chairman brought the meeting to a olose.
