THB ASHBURTON FORKS SOHOOL AFFAIRS.

TO TBB BD1TO&. Sib, — In common with the rest of the residents herejtl am glad to see by yesterday's issue that a meeting is to be held on Friday evening about eohool affairs. How a body of men oan be led by the nose by one Individual to suit his own vindictive purposes I am utterly at a loss to conceive. Bat a bone In tbe shape of a ploughing contract to one, a school job to npother, or an invite to a " klok up " *o a third, will work wonders with some. With regard to the proposer of the rld'culous motion, J Oorbetb, he has no right on the Oommittee, not being In the Sohool district, and he knows that. Why was the meeting, and a special one to boot — held at the Chairman's house. True, the ostensible reason was that the Chairman's le« was bad. Granted— but as he id and was able to scour the country nearly every day from here to the Binds and Asbbnrton he surely was able to g<y ha'f a mile tn the sohoM But the real reason is obvious — I understand on the authority of ono of the Oommlt'ee tints If onr "only Oftairm&n" cannot work his point he and his followers wl I resign. Great Heaven avert suoh a catastrophe ! Let us humble ourselves before him th*t arcS a calamity may not befall us !1 1 Our Lord Mayor has deprived us of the services of a first class bUotcßtnitb. Ha had < ffjoded, therefore, must he perish. And now ha ' has deoreed ch<it our schoolmaster mus" vanish His Lordship h»d a right to deprive us of the blacksmith, but we have something to say as to the teacher.* I hope, therefore, that all interested will roll up to morro *v evening and give our , 1 only Chairman " and his retainers a chßnce to carry out their threat Tt will be the best thing that could happen for , the district— be ter men will supply their placea.

I most say that as a district we have been very neglected m school matters, allowing our Lord Mayor to rule undipputed, bwt the last straw haß broken the camel's back The warmest thanks of the district are due to Mr Anderson for the manly Ftand he has taken m the matter. He is not a big man physically, but he is all grit and backbone I am, etc , A Latb Oommitteeman.
