Attack en a Warder.
Auckland, Jaly 18 It is r. ported that a murderous attack was made by a prisoner oq Warder Rutherford at the Mount Eden gaol. A convict named Brown hit Rutherford on the head with a hammer, but was at one 3 secured. He is believed to be insane Auckland Harbor Board. At the Harbor Board meeting yesterday application was made by Mr McGregor, the late engineer ef the Board, asking to be allowed a month's salary each year of his service, and offering to act as consultiog engineer for threo months, but a motion that he be appointed consulting engineer for three months and paid £150 fo? his services was negatived. The application was therefore declined. Presentation. Mrs Lilly, hon secretary of the Kindergarten, was yesterday presented with a puree of sovereigns and a c:mplimentary address. -
Vice-Prevention Society. A Pcciety was fornied last night for the prevention of State regulation, of Vice. Mr Wm Fox has been appointed .president, and a publio meeting will be held on the 80th.
Beer Duty Act. Ten charges for breaches of the Beer Duty Act have been laid against vV. J* Suiter, brewer. One case was called m court today, and adjourned till Friday, as Buifer wss giving evidence at a meeting of creditors m the bankrupt estate of Suiter and Co.
Penalty for Flogging a Boy. Wakganui, July I§. At. the 'Police Court to-day Oh^rles Enderby, farmer, was fined the maximum penalty of 9 galoeas and costs for ornelly flogging a boy named Barton who was In bis employ, the boy la; aged 14 bat {3 very small for his age and wai very much out and bruised. The Bench severely oenaared Enderby, and when the latter would not give op a stitch of the boy's clothing, Mr Krnll J,F. on 'the Bench said, tbat had the Bench known $he , defendants real sentiments they «ronld have sentenced him to two months imprisonment without the option of a fine. The Qoutt was crowded and loud applause followed flic KruU'a remirk«, which were regarded as well merited. The Broken Gable. Wblwkqton, July 18. The Oable Company have received Information th»t the oable repairing steamer Recorder has pioked up the Port Darwin end of the oable and spoke to that station this morning.
