The " Oamaru Mail " says :— lt is stated that, with a view to ascertaining the position of civil servants and their ability to stand reductions of salaries, a form has been cirou-| lated amongst them, to state their ages ; if married, how many children ; what rent they pay ; whether they keep a pig, cow, dog, or other animals; and whether they have to support any poor relations, and, if so, their number and ages This document has greatly annoyed the civil servants at the Seat of Government. We do not, however, see that there is any oauee for annoyance. Civil servants, it has been represented, are so situated that they are unable to Buffer any diminution of pay, and the objeot of the Government is, we suppose, to ascertain whether this be true or no f , m order that they may be able to deal with their case. Of oourse there is great sympathy with the Civil servants, and that is to be disoerned m the manner m which the report regarding the obnoxious form is worded. But our sympathy iB with the taxpayers.

With reference to the break m cable communication, which is said to have occurred m the vioinity of the voloano Tomboro, a contemporary supplies the f ollowing :— • • The aboye-mentioned volcano, which is m the Island of Sumbawa, supplies seismologists with an instance of one of the most violent voloanio disturbances on record. This was m 1815. On that occasion there was first a fearful whirlwind, whioh swept everything before it — houses, trees, cattle, and men being lifted up. Then came the eruption of Tom. boro, the outburst being so tremendous that, at a distance of 300 miles, m the Island of Java, the day was turned into profound darkness. The quaking of the ground was felt for a radius of 1000 miles, and navigation I was absolutely impeded by the floating masses of ashes and scoria. The fell disaster made a hecatomb m Sumbawa, where, of 12,000 inhabitants, only 26 were left alive. To give some idea of the voloanio forces of this part of the globe, it need only be mentioned that Java has nearly forty voloanio mountains."

The best medioine is Sander and Sons Euoalypti Extract. Test its eminent powerful effects m ooughs, oolds, influenza, etc — the relief is instantaneous. Thousands give the most gratifying testimony. His Majesty the King of Italy and medical syndicates all over the globe are its patrons. Bead the official reports that accompany each bottle. We have no occasion to offer rewards m proof of the genuineness of our references. The offioial reports of medical clinics and universities, the omoioial communication of the Consul-General for Italy at Melbourne ; the diploma awarded International Exhibition, Amsterdam — all these are authentic doouments, and, as suob, not open to doubt. We add here epitome of one of the various cases treated at the clinio of Sohultz, M.D., Professor, etc.—" 0.8., 24 years old ; oongestional abscess on the thigh. Inoißionß 13 made m two places. Although Lister's dressing was applied, the seoretion became, two days later, very copious, and had adopted a foetid, decomposed oharaoter. The temperature rose enormously. In consequence the dressing was_ removed, and on its place were made during the day-time repeated irrigations with Euoalypti Extract. The offensive foeter disappeared very soon, the fever abated within a few days, and the patient recovered af'er the lapse of several weeks. In this instance wo must not lose sight of the faot that the 1 ter treatment saved the patient's life.' — ( dvt.) 3
