HAMPSTEAD TOWN BOARD AND THE FIRE BRIGADE.
TO THE EDITOR. '
Sir — I am exceedingly sorry that l( An Humble Fireman " or any otber cf the fraternity, should think that I meant to infer that it was the fault of the Brigade, that fires m Hatnpstead were not extinguished with greater speed. I haste to inform that distinguished and wide awake writer of last evening that I have always felt the greatest interest and admiration for the Brigade. I am sure they all deserve mcch more than they get, for their sacr'fioe of time, sleep and money, m the interests of the ratepayers, and their readiness to rick their lives for the people. No body of men paid or unpaid could be more willing to do their best, than our firemen. T should like to say "Long may they live" and may their names be enrolled on the icroll of fame and handed down to posterity as willing martyrs to the lrtereo's of the ungrateful ratepayers of Ashburton and suburbs.
I am truly sorry, (hat the Gounoil did not pay more at cation to the leoommendatlons of the Brigade from time to time. If they had we shon'd have no trouble over adopting signals or receive complaints that the bell 1b m one plaoe and the engine m another. If lam rightly informed the Brigade bad a very practoil scheme to keep the lot together, horses included, but were prevented from doing so. In conclusion, I wish that very Humble Fireman had signed hla name, ao that I might have waited upon him to that he might open my eyes, and enlighten my dull uodersranding. I think he would have pity on mo, seeing I have been so unlucky as to have been born m poor "Sleepy Hollow," I should think he most have been born under that brilliant planet Jupiter, and teat he must be closely related to the gods. When I come to think, it must be very wicked for one like me to suggest any change white euoh men live. Please let me retire Into obscurity, with just one request, that my friend will as soon as possible, repair to " Sleepy Nelson," and there win for himself undying renown by devoting his brilliant talents to waking up those slumbering people, canning new life to pulsate m that sluggish, bat beautiful place. Then they will tell him tots of ancient stories, more wonderful than the alleged hearse and engine once to fill some future epistles. I hope Mr Editor I shall not have time to write another letter until we get water for Hampstead to wash away all the mad, I am, etc, GkO. W. AKDJIIWS,
