THE INTERRUPTED CABLE-

(per press association.) Wellington, Jnly 13. The Press ABBOoiation has received the following telegram from Mr Browning, Snperlntendant of the Gable Company at Wakapoaka :— " Wakapnaka 13th, I have reoeived the following from the Chairman of the Eastern Extension Company : "London, July 6 "la consequence of the unfortunate interruption through the sudden simultaneous break down of both the Java-Austra-lian cables, vthloh we attribute to volcanic action and to prevent a recurrence as far as possible the Company have decided to immediately lay a oable between Banjoewangl and Western Australia. This will give the oolooiats a third line of oommuoloation with Java and alternate land line through Australia. The repairing steamer Recorder is now over site of the break and the restoration of oummunU cation is expeoted m » few days. "

The following Information has been reoetved from the Superintendent of the Cable Company at Wakapuaka. : —

, " The Company's repairing steamer Reoorder left Singapore for tho cable ground on Sunday July Ist. She commenced grappling for the broken cable on Friday evening, but was considerably delayed by bad weather, and experienced some difficulty In finding the cables. She recovered the Binjoewangl end of one cable od Taesday, and buoyed it, The Port Darwin end of the saind cable was recovered last night. The ship Is now paying out cable to fill th« gap beiween the broken ends. The distance ef the break from Banjoewangi is 22t miles. The depth of water is 1300 fathoms.

" The steamer Governor General Meyer arrived at Port Dirwin today from Baujoewangl, brloglng 389 messages. She was specially chartered by the Oompnny as goon as possible after the interruption. Three days' notice waa given to all telegraph admtulstratioQs. The steamer Meyer can be detained at Port Darwin forty-eight hoars ; after that demurrage must be paid at the rate of £4 per hour."

The cable repairing steamer Eecorder has buoyed both ends of the old cable at a distance of 3 miles from each other. It is now thought that communication will be restored m a few hours. The work has been retarded owing to bad weather.

The steamer Meyer has arrived with a batch of English cables, which are now being forwarded.
