ACCIDENT TO THE DUNEDIN EXPRESS
(P3R PRESS ASSOCIATION.) Dunedin, July 10. A slip hae occurred on the Northern Bailway above Purakanui The engine of the Northern express train was thrown off the line, but no one, it appears, was hurt. The train due at 7.40 is expected to reach town by 10.30. The train despatched to fetch m the passengers by the Northern express train reached town at a quarter to 11 o'clock It appears the express train was going dead slow, when a slip occurred and struck the engine, which, strange to say, fell i towards the inner bank. There was an outer bank at tho place which wai forty yards to the north of what is known as the cliffs. The engine was a good d^al damaged. One closed waggon also left the line. The passengers were not greatly alarmed, although as some stones kept falling they were somewhat anxious. A trap was despatched from Waitati, only three raileß distant, but the passengers with one exception, decided to wait for the train from Dunedin and complete their journey. The cow-catcher was not touched, showing the slip fell just as the train approached.
Dunbdin, Jaly 11. The Railway Department does Dot consider the block at Purakanui of a aerlouß character, and prepared to run the Noithern express through as usual this morning, but the first train leaving for the North at seven o'clock reported a heavy ■lip at the northern end of the Deborah Bay tannel. This caused an efi; c'ive blook, rendering traffio ltnpoaetble. Gangs of men were sent out to clear away the muck. It Is possible thai tie express from the North will get through to-night, but this Is by no means a certainty So far as U known the South line \b all right. Jfc is now raining harder than ever.
