WAKANUI ROAD BOARD.
A meeting of thii Board was held on Saturday. Present— Messrs ML Bruce (Chairman), Jag. Brown, W. T. Lilt, and 6. Coe. CHAIRMAN'S REPORT; The Chairman reported that the action brought by Mr D, Wilson against the Board had resulted m Ihe Board's favor, the matter of costs had been held over by the Magistrate, at the request of Mr Wikon's counsel, to ascertain if the .Road Board would be willing to bear a share of inch costs. Instructions had been given to the Board's counsel to press for the Board's expenses m the case, as the members did not consider that m a matter of this kind they were justified m bearing a proportion of Mr Wilson's costs, *r could willingly expend the ratepayers money for inch a purpose. — Meetings of ratepayers to consider the question of dividing the County into two and abolishing the Road Boards, had been held at Newlands and Wakauui. At Newlanda it was unanimously resolved — " That while it may be advisable to divide the County, yet, m the epiolon of this meeting, it would be impolitic to abolish the Eoad Boards, for by 80 doing we should be deprived of local control We would recommend that the present Council be abolished, and that the Chairmen of Boad Boards form the Council, and it is expedient that the County Act be so amended as to give all the poweis of the present Council to a Council constituted of Chairmen of Boad Boards, and to relegate all works of a Jocil nature to the Road Boards" — it Wacanui it was carried by 9 to 2—" That it is the opinion of this meeting that it would be mnch to the benefit of the ratepayers if the Boad Boards were abolished and the works of the district undertaken by the County Council." CORRESPONDENCE! From G. Tait, making an offer for one of the cottages at Wakanui, and also to lea^t^hmd^-The^Boardjdecided not to self but would~leten the ueuaTtoHßSs.— From B. Lancaster, offering to sell a pile' driver. — The Board did not require one, but suggested his seeing the River Board. —From Property Tax Commissioner, asking that intending applicants for the making of the tiiennial assessment be allowed to inspeot rollß, etc. — Granted. — From M. Wilson, calling the Board's attention to a bad piece of road opposite his place at Seaview.— The Surveyor was directed to see into the matter. DEPUTATION Mr D. Fitzgerald waited on the Board and complained of their action m putting men on to grub up gorße on the road opposite his land, the road he said, was not much used, and he considered the Board treated him unjustly. It was pointed out to Mr Fitzgerald that he had neglected for a loDg period to do anything to the goTse growing en the road and though he bad been notified to clear it off, yet he had not done so; he had only himself to blame. The Clerks were instructed to forward an account of the cost of the work at onoe to Mr Fitzgerald, and if same was not paid to take proceedings to recover the amount, and also a penalty for not obeying the order. surveyor's report The report was read and adopted, FENCES.
Mr MoGlrr interviewed the Board with refe/tnce to the fence between his property and the reserve. He hud been ' keeping it m repair for a considerable | time and asked if the Board would now do something towards it as he was constantly repairing. OHXBTSEY BOAD. Considerable discussion took pUoe with reference to the resolutions passed by the County Council, and about which they j asked the opinion of the Board. The following resolutions were unanimously I sgreealtoi (1) " That this Boad oannot tpp'port the proposition to divide the County a>nd abolish the Boad Boards, became it bay no hopes that any money paring wonjd be fieeoted thereby, except by not attending to local wants ; which are now well provided for by the adoption of the ward system— the outcome of judicious legislation to meet the requirements of the people." (2) "That a more definite Hoe should be drawn between the duties of the Oonnoll and the duties of the Boad Boards than has hitherto been observed, and that the Council should attend to only such works •i the water supply and its extension, and other purely county matters which are not within the powers oonferred on the Boad Boards by the Bond Boards Aot."
