A Maori woman named Hikirangi, agrd sixty yearß, with her boy Hahatan were burned to death at Ohaeawai, Bay of Islands, on Tuesday last, the whare m which they were residing carolling fire. It is supposed they were sleeping when the fire broke out. Auckland, July 1. The body of a man, whose name is yet unknowD, was found on tha beach at Point Resolution last night. There was a bullet wound m the forehead, and a revolver lying near by, and ifc is supposed to be a case of euiolde. Wellington, July 1. The Eastern Extension Cable Company's repairing s< earner which hrn been engaged for aome time past m repairing the broken cable across Cook Strait, returned to port this morning, having been sucoess* ful m restoring complete communication between the North and South Islands. During the operations it was found necesßary to borrow from ihe steamer a certain length of cable m order to replace a portion of the old cable, which was found m a very bad condition, and the steamer will reta n ia a day or two to recover the borrowed section of the cable to replace it with cable which Government have m store here.
