The "New Zealand Times" says: — Rumors of possible alterations m tho Cabinet are still afloat. The names of Messrs Lance and Walker are mentioned as possible oandi* dates for seats on the Treasury Benches. Miss Tuttiet, tho lady who oighteon months ago achieved anonymous famo as the author of " Tho Silonoo of Dean Maitland," is, like poor Smedley, a confirmed invalid. She is the daughter of a popular medical man at Newport, m the Isle of Wight (whioh figures m the novel as Oldport), and possesses a oat to the full as wonderful as the immortal " Mark Antony." Miss Tuttiot's iirst literary effort was an unpretentious littlo story called " The Brokon Tryst,' published as long ago as 1879 by Samuel Tinsloy. Its success was not encouraging, and for a time the poor lady laid BBido her pen altogether. She wrote " Doan Maitland" slowly. The title was an inspiration of the happiest sort, Messrs Kegan, Paul and Trench were naturally etiuok by it, and gave the MSS. promptly to their reader, who reported only fairly well of tho story. SuooeßS, indoed, was not immediate. Veoka passed beforo some favorable reviews gave an impetus to the sale of the book. Then, however, new editions oould hardly be got ready quick enough. The secrot of tho author's identify has been better kept than is usually the ease. Certain tricks of stylo whioh Miss Tuttiet and Mrs Harrison (author of " Colonel Enderby's Wife ") have m common led to tho work being universally asoribod to tho latter at first. When this lady denied tho Boft impeaohment the critics were quite at Boa. ASHBUIITON COUNTY COUNCIL. NOTICE Is hereby given that Mr 0.
