Mr D. H. Brown is nothing if he is not practical, and the details of his scheme for lighting the Borough and giving us a high pressure water supply are worthy of some consideration. His scheme is feasible enough, but the question of cost will, without doubt, strangle it. However much we might like to see the electric light m full working order here, and however valuable a high pressure water supply might be found, the cost at present yrould deter the Council from adopting the Bcheme. The Council could not do less than thank Mr Brown for bringing before them such a proposal, and the idea of getting the Engineer to lay before the Council an estimate of the cost of such a scheme as Mr Brown suggests is one to be commended. Without working the matter out carefully it could not be said how much the scheme would cost, but once the figures aro before the burgesses a decision can be come to as to whether it is advisable to go on with the project, or let it stand over for an improvement m trade and prices which might encourage the townspeople to give consent to the \ adoption of what is undoubtedly a good idea. Though we might be inclined to disagree with Mr Brown ©n. points of i detail, yet the main idea is worthy of all support. So far as we can see it is a few years ahead of Ashburton, but energy and enterprise are not wanting amongst us, and there is no reason if the scheme were proved to be cheap why it should not be appropriated for the benefit of the citizens,
