., — «. Pigeonß are unusually plentiful m the Paraekaretu district. Big turnip paragraphs are now going the rounds. In Ohristchuroh 34£Iba takes the oaks as yet. The number of idiots who have invented a new method for exterminating rabbits is legion. Reuben Johnson, late hotelkeeper, at Geraldine, has been oommitted for trial at the next sitting of the Supreme Court at Timaru, for fraudulent bankruptcy. Bail was allowed. The opposite of ".boom" is "flop." The decline m Australian silver stock is known as the silver flop. "Boom" is an Ameiican invention, " flop " Australian. The Australians are beginning to resent the incursions of the New Zealanders. They say they are worse than the [Chinese, and talk about putting a poll tax on them. A Bmall country paper m the Wairarapa district, speaks of the '; Finanoial Misstatement," and " the halting and blundering performance which Sir Harry Atkinson pleaßed to oall his Finanoial Statement. The one man who voted at the Heretaunga Local Option poll cost the Hawkes' Bay . Council two guineas for the returning-officer's ! services. The vote was considered an expensive one. Dr Salmond, who has created consternation m the Presbyterian camp at Dunedin by his "Reign or Grace " pamphlet, h» B resigned I his position as a member of the First Church Session. At the R.M. Court this morning, before Mr H. Fnedlandor, J.P., James Franklyn, for I drunkenness, was fined 5s and costs, and for resisting the police m the execution of their duty 203 and costs, with the usual alternative m each case. Provision for fire extinguishing ia the event of bombardment, is agitating the oolumns of the " Wellington Times." A correspondent points out that it would be easy for an enemy's cruiser to burn the town down with war rockets; A working man m Wellington went bankrapt for £89. He employed a solioitor, and the creditors held that a very good dividend could have been paid out of the money so employed. His disoharge was refused by the Judge. A life-size portrait of King Tawhiao, ia native costume, by Mr Gaut, tha well«kno\ra artist, is being exhibited m Wellington. Tie reserve prioe sot on it by Mr Gaut is tvo hundred guineas. It ia to be sent to tie Melbourne Exhibition, The Appeal Court to consider.objectionsto the classification of lands m the Wakami River Distriot resumed its sitting yestordvy afternoon. The appeals of G, Hill, W. J. Wilson, D. Oochrane, and- John Brown, were heard and the Court further adjourned for a week. Why do not the dairy factories pay mere attention to the manufacture of butter ? m moot instanoes all they appear to aim at is cheese, Certainly oheeae has paid fairly v»ll of late, but there is money m butter. The Koseville Factory, Taieri, recently had to decline an order for 2J tons of butter at a abilling a pound, and the Henley Faotory finds a ready sale for all the butter it can turn out. At a shilling a pound, there is manifestly more money m butter than there is m cheese. — •• Exchange." A Victorian farmer, writing to the Government about some payments for his selection, ends a long rambling letter with the voluntary and agreeable information that if tha Depart, ment does not do the proper thing, he will "Come down to Melbourne with his brandingiron and brand old Dow, and soon bring him to his senses." r fhjs "Australasian" of the 9th inatant gays;— '-'^hja frozen {mutton trade irt New Zealand is decidedly Ipoking up. The news of 4d to 4|d per lb for the gqptio's cargo, which arrived m London m the tfott'd ygjsk m May, coupled with a redaction of § of a penny per lb iin the Freezing Company's charges, thus reducing the general charges to 2£ per lb, jaas inspired shippers with confidence m the future. A etf 11 further reduotion m charges is required to bring them down to the Sydney standard — If per lb. As there ia no (jpepial reason for the difference, it is hoped tfyafc m due course tho levelling will be fully accom? pliahed." The " Australasian " is m error m attributing the high. tariff to the freezing companies. It is the shipping companies that have been making hay while the sun shone as well as when it didn't. However, as they have pretty well killed the goose that was laying their golden egg, they will have to content themselves with waiting patiently till the process of recuperation takes place. The rising of prices m London will probably assist m this. — " N. O. Times."
He who saith that there m no suoh thing as I an honest man you may be sure is himself jj a knave. I Tiger hunters killed 1464 tigers m India { last year, and tigers hunting killed about 1000 | human beings. . The old British war-ship m which Mr Darwin oiroumnavigated the world, and began tbosj speculations whioh have revolutionised soienoe, is now a Japanese training-ship. Lynohing party (apologetically) —We came to tell yer, ma'am, that we lynohed yer husband. We admit that we got the wrong man, but yer got the laugh on us this time. — " Puck." Bevißartholomew Edwards, reotor of Ashill, Norfolk, is the "oldest olergymanin England. He has just oompleted his 100 th year. He has (been reotor of Ashill just seventy-five years. - P. T. Barnum, the showman, is quoted as saying that he would aocept the Republican nomination for President. But, despite his profession, Barnum has no Bhow. — "Norristown Herald." Says the " New Zealand Herald " :— The Chinese Conference has closed. It is oharaoterietio of the lack of promptitude and deoison whioh marks the aotions of New Zealand statesmen, that the delegate of this colony did not arrive m Sydney m time to take part m the proceedings of the Conference, A young woman m Brunswick, Ga., sent his photograph, handsomely framed, to a girl whose favor he wished to win. The next day the frame came back with a note, m whioh she thanked him for the pioture, but begged to return the frame, as she made it a rule never to aocept anything valuable from a gentleman. The total capital whioh is employed m the manufacture of explosives throughout Gemany is estimated at £1,250,000. The total quantity of explosives manufactured !b about 6000 tons per annum, representing a value of from £500,000 to £600.000. Only about one-third of this production is consumed m the country, the rest being exported. . The sum and substance of Mr Froude's observations m the Antilles is that while they are still under the nominal rule of the British Government they are absolutely lost toAngloSaxonism. The English language still prevails m Bermuda, the Bahamas, Barbadoea, Trinidad, Jamaica, St. Luoia, and other British islands, and always will ; but the population id blaok, not white — African, not English ; and the islands have ceased to have any value to the British people except as military and naval stations m a quarter of tha globe where military and naval stations are little needed. At the request of the Ashburton Masonß the Rev E. A. Scott will hold a speoial service m St. Stephen's Church on Sunday afternoon at throe o'clook. The members of the three local Lodges will assemble at the Masonic Hall at two o'olock, and march m procession from thence to the church. The collection will be m aid of the ftmd for the poor and distressed. It is hoped that the publio will respond liberally on this occasion. There is a great deal more distress m the district than is generally supposed, and the fund whioh this service will assist is administered without respect to creed or nationality. In former years these Masonic services have resulted m materially augmenting this fund, and no doubt that of Sunday next will prove no exception. Apropos of the wreok of the Hawea an exchange says : — " A remarkable instance of presentiment has been related to us, and as the gentleman is of unimpeachable reputation, we oan give every assurance as to the truth of the statement. A gentleman, residing m Palmerston, was expeoting his wife from Auckland by the Hawea, and while driving from Palmerston to Bulls m the early morning of Tuesday, he became seized with the strong, m fact, overpowering presentiment, that the vessel was wrecked, and on arriving at Bulls he communicated his fears*to several friends. A few minutes later bis fears were verified by receipt of " a wire," but a further telegram conveyed the glad intelligence that his wife had happily missed the ill-fated steamer. . Quite an animated scene was presented opposite the postoffice last evening as the members of the Ashburton Cycling Club as.ecmbled, previous to (starting for a moonlight Tun to Wihchmore. A very creditable number of wheels turned out, considering that a 'strong head wind was blowing, whioh made the outward run rather stiff. The mount was sounded a few minutes after seven, sub-Gap-tain Brown leading the van. Winohmore was reaohed m an hour, the stiff nor'-west breeze making driving rather slow. After a few minutes spell a start was made for Ashburton, and with the wind and grade favorable, quick time was made, town being reached m forty minuter. No serious mishap ooourred to mar the outing, whioh was muoh enjoyed by all who took part m it. It is proposed to hold another shortly. The Committee of the Auokland Politioal Finanoial Reform Association Btate that for the past nine months Mr Vaille's system has been working successfully on the Whangarei-Kamo-seotion. The results of seven months' working have been investigated, and they prove conclusively that a better financial result oan be obtained by averaging fares and rates and charging much lower prioes ; and they also reveal the astounding fact that on this line a saving m the working expenses has been made of 49 per cent. As the relative cost of working a large concern ib much less than of a small one, 49 per cent, on the whole syßtem of railways would mean reducing taxation by no less a sum than £336,790. To all athletes the words of W. A. Bowe, the Lynn flyer, who holds every bioyole record from a quarter to twenty-two miles, will be interesting. He says :— " I have consulted the finest dootors and pbysioians m the United States, and they tell me the greater part of my success lies mmy abstinence. I fsel myself that it is so. %am just an good oqe day as another. I never have an off-day whereas people who take stimulants are good to-day and nothing the next day. Jt some* times takes them a fortnight to get back into good order. Brother professionals have admitted as muoh to me. When I rode my greatest distanoe m the hour I had not dons any work;on my bioyole for a week on acooupfc of ,bad weather, and though I thought I should not be m condition, yet when I came to ride I found I accomplished the greatest performance ever done m the world— and all on tea too, my boy." The Melbourne correspondent of the " Star" says : — A most ingenious piece of meohanism, constructed on the principle of the weighing ;and cigarette-serving machines which are to be found m the Btreeta of very large towns, has been constructed m Melbourne. It is a drink-dispenser, and it has been demonstrated that it oan be safely trusted to serve drinks to &ny extent. Only one kind of drink oan be obtained from a Bingle maohine, but for mixed driuks the mechanism can be successfully duplicated, and altogether the automaton is a wonderful one. It is not unlikely that it will come into praotioal use at raoo meetings and other publio gatherings, and serve a useful purpose: but the question has arisen whether it cannot be uped for successfully contravening the licensing laws. A drunken man could help himself to liquor to hia" heart's oontpnt go long »a he dropped m the slot of the paaohins the necessary goins to sot fche apparatus m motion 5 and it could be used on a Sunday without an offence being due to anyone, The drink-dispenser is therefore likely to be a new trouble to temperanoe legislators. In an address delivered some time previous to hia death Mr Smith said . — " Cowards may ory ; • You are going too fast,' but every intereat of home, humanity, civilization, and country demands immediate aotion. The last time 1 was at home my little ;boy stood by me to Bay, with a laugh, < Papa, I's almost a mjjn.' For a moment I was as happy as he m the thought; and then the oloud came ; every inch hd'grows taller, ever day he grows pjder, brings nearer tire time' when- he will go but lon the streets of a oijty that opens" more jjohools to make him a deyil than it does to pake him a man. T bowed ray bpad and asked God to give me courage and musole lerve to stand m the front of the fight with ny fellow-workers and assist m freeing this lation from this curse before my boy fihould ?e }n danger. 'In a hurry 7' How many nore hpartp must be broken ? How many nore featyea jbe starved? How many more yomen must tiaye"ftie light of love and hope akon out of their lives?* How' many more j athere, end bugbapds, and bods ' must be iffered up on the altar of tbfa devil j§h license system, and other compromises, before this Christian people will stand shoulder to Shoulder, and for wife and babies and friends md home and country ory : — ' Cowards, out if tha way t This is a battle to (be death, infr&ay fis>na the tffjht 1 ' » ;
